i could shut the door of my bedroom

I felt secure and happy in our new house, where I could shut the door of my bedroom, pile up books and read for as long as I liked. I was growing from a skinny child into a skinny adolescent. I went for long solitary bicycle rides, swam, visited the library regularly, read and wrote. Words, poetry, history interested me, and I asked my mother for the two-volume Shorter Oxford Dictionary for my thirteenth birthday.
