The G.I. Joe cartoon series began with the multi-part story "Pyramid of Darkness". The first part aired on September 16, 1985. It, along with the rest of the series, was narrated by Jackson Beck. The cartoon had previously been launched as a mini series G.I. Joe: The M.A.S.S. Device.
