“Come Back Home” (2018), Timothy Hyunsoo Lee’s newly installed laminated glass panels at the LIRR Stewart Manor station, takes inspiration from the flora of Garden City, extracting colors from the leaves as they cycle through the seasons. Derived from a series of original watercolor paintings, Lee worked with fabricator Tom Patti Design to translate his paintings into laminated glass panels. Using fractal-like forms, Lee responds to the landscape of the Stewart Manor community creating inviting spaces along the platform.

The glowing light from Tom Patti’s hand-made colorful glass windows, “Passage” (2004), at Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street-Broadway (E, F, M, R, 7) illuminates commuters on the longest day of the year. Enjoy the light!

Thomas Patti was trained in industrial design at the Pratt Institute, and his interest in glass grew out of academic investigations into the nexus of art, engineering, and architecture. Patti’s work is nonfunctional and deals with the potential of the form, particularly the question of how to juxtapose pieces of glass. This piece invites the viewer to look into the glass (preferably with the aid of light transmitted from below) in order to appreciate the geometric yet delicate quality of the layers of glass.
