After experiencing some underground success in the early 90’s producing for Capital Tax & Father Dom as DJ Smooth G (and an uncredited remix of Eric B & Rakim’s “Casualties of War”), Tone Capone blew up with his work on Dru Down & Luniz albums a few years later. His most famous work is “I Got 5 On It”, one of the most enduring rap songs ever and is actually a replay not a direct sample. Tone explains: “I felt like I could replay it and control the breaks of the song better. After that is when I really started to do more replays, I also found out that we didn't have to pay for the master usage of a sample we just had to negotiate the splits of the publishing.”
He replayed other samples as well such as Bobbi Humphrey’s 'You Make Me Feel So Good' on Shyheim’s “Life As A Shorty” & and 'Girl' by Luniz in which he replayed 'Left Me Lonely' by MC Shan. Producers took notice of his talents as well as rappers; Mike Dean invited Tone to co-produce a number of Scarface records on his “Untouchable” masterpiece. Let’s celebrate another unheralded west coast production vet.
