Hiccup was so ready to leave New Berk behind and start a new life down in the Hidden World together with Toothless and his other mate, Light. For months, as he made the preparations to leave, he was dreaming about this day, growing happier and more excited the closer the move came.
Yet now here he stands on the rocky edge of the entrance. The water rushing down so loud that it silences every other noise. He looks down into the large hole, spotting the wet rocks on the bottom with a basket swung over his back, and he hesitates.
A celebration was held for him on New Berk, speeches were given about how everyone had somewhat seen this coming. Hiccup always did seem like he belonged with dragons more than he did his own kind. But he's been chief for a good few years, found them a home to be safe on and thrive, they haven't forgotten yet that it was Hiccup who "gave" them the dragons in the first place. And after three years of uninterrupted peace with a strong network of allies now at their side, it seemed like the perfect time to let him go.
Yet the actual goodbye the following week after the celebration were rather rough and Hiccup finds that he's trying to convince himself that this is still a good idea. He deserves this, this was a move born out of the need to start his own family.
It's not like the Hairy Hooligans remain undefended. The only enemy that can get onto New Berk is the flying kind, whether they be dragons or dragon riders. And Astrid is chief now, so he left them in safe hands. It required "dethroning" Hiccup with a "duel" after she “challenged” him, but that was nothing more than following their law. It was fun, they made a spectacle of it, bets were placed on whether Hiccup would really "take the fall" or if his Hooligan pride would kick in and ruin the whole show. Little did they know that he's used to losing to Astrid in a fight. All the Dragon Riders are.
And after the match was over and she had officially earned her title as chief, that was when a banquet was held, the start of that celebration.
Hiccup and Toothless left early morning with Light already waiting for them down below. It took an entire day of flying and it went by rather quietly. The sun is setting now, on both another day as well as Hiccup's life as a Hairy Hooligan. It shouldn't be as painful as it is given that it's his own choice and New Berk can always count on them for help or to drop by unannounced. Ruffnut and Tuffnut made sure to tell him to keep his visits that way, they would very much like to see the people panic to put together a proper welcome.
And yet, Hiccup still stands there and… hesitates.
There were a lot of tears, Snotlout couldn't even look at him for fear of losing his composure while Fishlegs had a hard time letting him go from the hug they were in. The twins kept stalling, neither knowing what they were going to do if they wouldn't have Hiccup anymore to "remind them" not to go yak tipping. The crime rate on Berk might even skyrocket according to them. With Eret assuring him that he would make sure that would not happen. Astrid's way of letting him go was to tell him not to worry, when it was clear she would worry about him. Hiccup does have a knack for getting into trouble, after all.
Gobber told him how proud he was of him, that Stoick would be, too. His mother… Well, she moved down into the Hidden World just shortly before today, almost relieved when they both reached the conclusion that it was time to come down here.
And yet, Hiccup… hesitates.
The sun is sinking lower in the sky, it's becoming darker out. And while that won't be a problem for where they're going, Toothless does think it's time to go.
He wasn't born into the Hairy Hooligan tribe, he knows that whatever heartache he's feeling is ten times worse for Hiccup, but it is getting time. And he gets up to approach him, to tell him exactly that.
With a soft vocal sound, he appears next to him. Rubbing Hiccup's back with his head before standing at eye level with him. There are no tears in his human's eyes, that goodbye from early this morning was never meant to be forever. The sadness in his eyes is still profound.
"I know, it's time to go," they're the first words spoken by him since they left. Toothless licks his hand before showing him his back and Hiccup mounts up, clicking his prosthesis in place.
They give the sunset one last look as if it's the last time they'll ever see it before Hiccup tells his dragon that he's ready. Together, the two of them take off and disappear down into the Hidden World. They let the sun set on the life they used to have.
I was wondering if you could tell me more about that Toothcup event please?
Sure! The event itself is being managed by @toothcup-week, so they're gonna be the best resource/authority as to what's actually going to happen. They're currently accepting prompt suggestions for the next couple of days, and then in about a week and a half they're planning to show the list. This means anyone who wants to participate has about a month and a half to prepare stuff to flood the fandom tag with share with other fans.
I'm particularly drawn to it not only because, well, Toothcup, but also because it's open to all sorts of Hiccup-Toothless relationships (platonic, romantic, familial, friendly... possibly sexual but I haven't asked), whereas a lot of other ship events tend to focus on one aspect.
Last day of Toothcup Week 2025 today! I would like to thank anyone who has written for this event and who still plans to write for it!
And for those who do still plan on writing for this event; don't worry! The Ao3 collection will remain open and I will still reblog your fics if you tag me. Today is not the final deadline, today is simply the last official day of Toothcup Week 2025. I'm still very excited to see what else will appear in my notifs or in the collection.
