Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
OHHHH what a great ask!! Sorry it took me so long to answer it, I just wanted to make sure I thought of all my faves so I wasn’t forgetting anybody. In no particular order:
1. Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass - I love him because he tries to do the right thing in all the wrong ways, and his guilt complex is so, so delicious to watch as it progresses and grows and morphs into something like unwitting redemption. It gets much worse for him before it gets better (and the "better" part is subjective), but holy shit, the ride is fantastic.
2. Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo (novel and Disney movie)- in the novel she is both the Virgin Mary figure (she IS Notre Dame de Paris, in all senses of the word), but is also meant to represent the cathedral itself, the way it is both loved and mistreated over time. In the Disney movie, she's beautiful, badass, stands up for justice, and was the type of person I wanted to grow up to be, when I was a little girl.
3. Gerard Keay from The Magnus Archives (podcast)- who doesn't love a tall, hot goth with tattoos who is intimately knowledgeable about the horrors, and is one of the only people who tries to save others from accidentally falling prey to them??
4. Louis de Pointe du Lac from The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice (novels, film, tv series)- MY BELOVED. He is a permanent open wound of a man, perpetually haunted by his nature as a vampire. This character is the reason vampires became so stupidly popular in the 20th century. Anne Rice wrote Interview with the Vampire (with Louis as the narrator and MC) in the 1970's, but vampires weren't too big outside of the success of Bram Stoker's Dracula from the 1890's. When she wrote that book (the first of the 13 books in her Vampire Chronicles), she started the trend of making the vampire the main character, as the POV character, as the protagonist who you are supposed to root for. Louis is the start of it ALL, and I will forever be obsessed with him.
5. Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars- he's a beautiful sensei martial artist priest father figure peacemaker swordsman slut diplomat whose disciplined principles are just as strong as his faith and his piety.
6. Kento Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen- the sex appeal is strong in this one, not gonna lie, but that's NOT THE ONLY REASON I LOVE HIM. He's the type of person I date in real life, he's introverted, caring, and gentle, but equal parts bitchy, practical, and thoughtful. He is good at what he does. He protects children, he cuts to the heart of every issue so that it can get done faster. He deserves a vacation to Malaysia.
7. Captain Hook from Peter Pan- He was my favorite villain as a child, and after reading the book, it became clear why. In film and stage adaptations, he is always played by the same actor who plays the children's father. Always. In the novel, it is even more obvious that he is the physical embodiment of Wendy's fear of growing up. Not only because he is frightening, cunning, and impossible to hide from. But also because Wendy is attracted to him, and he exploits this by trying to assure her that growing up is a good thing--but only because he is manipulating her to get to Peter. He's an electra complex and an antagonist, and a deeply relatable man--who shouldn't even be in Neverland at all, and is a stranger in a strange land. The reader will see themselves in him, not the children, and it will be an unwelcome surprise.
8. Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon from Sailor Moon- She was a hugely formative character for small me!! My first hyperfixation, my first introduction to a tv show that could change my life. Whether I always liked her because I was similar to her, or I imprinted upon her and became more like her out of admiration, I'll never know. But she shares my hair/eye color, my blood type, my zodiac sign, my love for cats and astronomy, my favorite foods, as well as my wildly unchecked bisexuality. So, I mean, who's to say?
9. Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat from X-men: Evolution (and all other X-men franchises, for that matter)- she was who I identified with most when I was an impressionable middle-schooler, getting into comic books for the first time. She suffered from migraines (as I have, my whole life) when her mutant powers were manifesting, which made middle-school me wish with fervor that my own pain could result in some cool superpower. But I loved to watch her dance, loved to watch her fight, and her intelligence with computers and physics inspired me to learn and devour as much knowledge as I could possibly fit in my head.
10. Starfire from Teen Titans- She was the character who first got me into writing fanfiction. I wrote my first fanfics on fanfiction.net back when I was 14 years old, back when Teen Titans was in its earliest seasons, and my love for her personality, powers, and relationships with her loved ones had me reading fics that I still remember, to this day, for how cool and impactful they were for me. She was just so inspiring, and made me want to write constantly.
Thank you so much for this fantastic ask!! I had so much fun answering it. ❤️
