Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Connolly in Das Lied, plus two baroque rarities
Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.
Camilla de Rossi was a woman of Roman descent who composed oratorios for Emperor Joseph I of Austria in the early eighteenth century (or so Wikipedia tells me). The Dutch Bach Society will be giving a performance of her oratorio Il sacrifizio di Abramo at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam this Saturday; the soloists are unknown to me, but this listing caught my interest because of the female baroque composer. Scheduled for live broadcast Saturday, September 13 on NPO Radio 4.*
Those of us who were unable to hear Sarah Connolly’s warmly lauded performance in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in London earlier this month have a chance to listen from afar when she performs Das Lied again with the same conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, this time in Berlin. Torsten Kerl is the tenor soloist in a concert also featuring Schubert’s Symphony No. 4, with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Live broadcast Sunday, October 14 on Deutschlandfunk Kultur.*
André Cardinal Destouches is another baroque composer whom I had never heard of, and had to look up on Wikipedia. His opera Sémiramis was given a tricentennial performance a few days ago at the Ambronay Festival with a strong cast: Judith van Wanroij, Emmanuelle de Negri, Mathias Vidal, and João Fernandes. Deferred broadcast Sunday, October 14 on France Musique.*
