Tosh walking Beastie!
The Fraggle Rock Story Ch. 10
Chapter Ten: Behind the Curtain
Hours before the dream, after Boober had left, Tosh saw the strange curtain go up across the hall again. The Beast had already gone to sleep, so she didn’t need to go to the trouble of finding a beastsitter. Tosh ran so fast to the mysterious house that she tripped and stumbled a couple times, but she seemed to have no knowledge of the pain. Finally, she walked through the door. “Hello, darling!” she said.
“Hi, sweetheart,” said Lou. “I missed you.”
“I was only gone an hour!”
“Oh, you know how I get. Needy, I guess… and perhaps a bit jealous, too.”
“Jealous of who? I love you, silly!”
“Oh, I know that. But if you love anyone else in addition to me, I wish you’d just tell me! We can work things out.”
“There’s no-one else right now!”
“Alright, fine. I’ll just go right ahead and say it. I happened to look out the window, you know, the one across the hall, and I saw you kissing Boober. I just wish you’d tell me--”
“Oh, Lou, for goodness sake! I’ve tried my best to forget about that already!” Lou hadn’t heard this, however, and continued detailing her noble compromise.
“Maybe I’ll never love him, but if you love him, why keep you from your happiness? You’ve got two hands, after all--”
“He’s just an old friend in a bad situation.”
“Personally, I always thought he was gay,” said Lou. “But I can’t blame him if you turned his head, after all, you turned mine and--”
“Lou, will you please listen?”
“Of course.”
“Boober and I have been friends for a while, as you know.”
“Aww…” said Lou, “I love it when friends grow together…”
“But I’m not in love with him!” said Tosh.
“Then why kiss him?”
“Because he thinks he’s in love with me.”
“What do you mean, honey? How do you know he’s not?”
“Lou, do you remember when you told me you loved me?”
“Pretty well. I was damn nervous.”
“Did you ever say anything like ‘I guess,’ or ‘sure, why not?’ when you confessed?”
“Of course not. I was never more certain of anything in my life.”
“Well, he did.”
“Well, just because he’s a bad liar isn’t any reason to kiss him,” said Tosh. “You want something to drink? I forgot to offer you anything!”
“I’m fine,” said Tosh. “And I really didn’t mean anything by it. I just didn’t want to hurt his feelings.”
“That’s what’s probably going to happen,” said Lou. “You can’t just string him along like this!”
“But he tried so hard!”
“It doesn’t matter! The best thing to do now, Tosh, is to let him down gently.”
“You’re right. As soon as I get up the nerve, I’ll tell him—”
“Boober, you’re a very nice boy, and I hate to do this, but it’s not you, it’s me, and, whilst flattered, I find that I can love you only as a friend. Farewell, little Boober, farewell!” said Lou, revealing herself to be a complete ham. “May the world go well with thee—my heart, alas, belongs to another.”
“Oh, don’t tell me you’re still jealous!”
“I’m no-ot,” said Lou teasingly, “You just give a very convincing performance of falling in love. You know I could never be mad at you, not if you’re honest. If there is anyone else, just let me know. I’m sure all could be arranged.”
“Thank you,” said Tosh. “But there’s nobody but you at the moment… and I really would like to kiss you right now.”
“I’m here for it,” said Lou. After a decent enough amount of kissing, she finally said “Tosh, why are we keeping our love a secret again?”
“I’m not ashamed of you, darling, really I’m not,” said Tosh. “But if people were to find out they might—I don’t know, call us a couple of saps or something. Mush-heads—something like that.”
“Is that all?” said Lou. “Because I’ll confess to being a sap for you, Tosh-darling…”
“But what if they point at us? And laugh?”
“Why should they?”
“Oh, I don’t know—but I worry so, please don’t give us away,” Tosh said, nuzzling up to Lou.
“Uh, er--” said Lou, still not quite used to this level of affection, “Sure I won’t, honey.” Nuzzling got her every time.
“Keep it at any cost! I’d hate to see us embarrassed.”
“Couldn’t I talk to that Mokey fella about it at least? She’d never insult us.”
“Are you crazy? She loves romance so much she wouldn’t be able to keep the secret!”
“I just feel like I could use some advice.”
“You don’t need any. I’m so lucky to be with you--”
“But are you keeping any secrets from me?”
“Never…” Tosh trailed off and fell asleep in Lou’s arms.
“You’re the weirdest fraggle I ever met,” whispered Lou, feeling a thousand emotions as she held Tosh a little closer. “I love you.”
