You just straight up don’t know how much written information you use without realizing until you can no longer access that written information. Then you spend twenty minutes as ending and descending the same freaking set of escalators until you find your bus stop when all you wanted was some bread 😭

Daily Dose of Facepalm

It never ceases to amaze me how little attention people pay when they’re on vacation. At the historic site I work at, it’s not uncommon for us to have tons of guests that show up without knowing ANYTHING about the place. So, I’ve worked out this little “script” I go into that explains what the place is and what we’ve got. Takes all of literally 30 seconds.

And then I get guests like this guy. I had just wrapped up my little speech for him, with him nodding along the whole time, before he reaches over to our rack of postcards and picks up one of the front gate. It’s a beautiful photo and everyone drives through the gate as they come in. This guy then proceeds to ask, in all seriousness, “So, this front gate here, is there, like, anything beyond it?”

you know, traveling abroad is always a bit exiting because my last name is Mäkelä (the 5th most common last name in finland) and as you can notice, it has the letter Ä in it.

well, as Ä is a letter that doesn’t exist in most languages, i’ve seen many different ways of which my name’s been written. the most common and logical ones are:

Makela as Ä is technically just A with dots over it Maekelae as Finnish Ä represents the phonetic sound /æ/

then there are the ways it’s written in languages that have even more different writing systems like:

japanese katakana: マケラ (makera) russian cyrillic: Мякеля  /mjakelja/

but i am quite curious, her majesty’s theatre, how in heck did my last name turn into Mdkeld? honesty, MDKELD!!??? like, where’s the logic behind that?

as you can exspect, i've been asked to spell my name in the past, so i try to come prepared and i often even have some idea what to expect but i can tell you, Mdkeld is definitely not one of them

I always try to be a better person. And I feel like I am a good person because of that.

I’m a bitch, yes, but I try to always be polite.

But being a tourist in the Philippines, I don’t feel like I’m coming across as polite at all.

And these are the top reasons why:

• I speak American English well. And fast. And without an Filipino accent. And people are, I’ve been told, intimidated by that sometimes. Even my cousins can’t understand me sometimes. And I’m sorry about that.

• Whenever I talk in Tagalog (Filipino), which I believe I am pretty fluent in, I have an accent, I’ve been told, and that makes me seem maarte (Tagalog for bitchy, like a princess, a rich bitch, like you’re better than everyone else, etc.)

• I don’t say the proper respectful terms like po and opo because I wasn’t brought up using them. I never used them in America.

And now that I know these reasons, I will work on them.
