Towertale's co-op update is live
It's hard to believe that Towertale came out 9 months ago. Sometimes, it feels like the past year has wallowed in its badness so much that it's broken time itself. It's always nice to revisit a good game, though, and Towertale's recent co-op update made for a convenient excuse to reinstall it. First, a disclaimer: I don't know anyone else with any meaningful gaming experience, and disrupting the schedules of people I know to throw them at a decently challenging game they'd struggle with didn't seem particularly friendly, so no one is controlling player 2 in the below video. All of Towertale's modes (including the story, arcade, and boss rush modes) can be played through in co-op mode. Playing through the story mode in co-op results in a slightly different story that may not make a whole lot of sense to those unfamiliar with the single-player story content, especially since it glosses over all of the story developments prior to the last few bosses and assumes that you already have knowledge of who everyone is, but it serves as an interesting "bad ending" variant ideally experienced just before finishing the story with the fourth and final character. I'd recommend playing through the first three characters in single-player mode, then going through co-op—which can be played in single-player—before finishing Dark Echo's "good ending" story campaign. Without a doubt, the best part of the single-player game is when you have the option to run through all of the bosses with CPU-controlled allies. Co-op mode could potentially replicate that fun, and you're even more empowered because any character who falls can be revived. As far as I can tell, there isn't a limit to the number of times they can be healed. Bosses don't appear to be tougher, either, or at least not meaningfully stronger. Compare the damage I'm doing in the embedded video against this video I took immediately afterward in single-player mode. It's pretty much the same, so having that second (or third, or fourth) character attacking instead of standing around would be huge. And now, a rant: Nestled in the co-op patch announcement's talk about the Nintendo Switch version is the revelation that the Steam version hasn't allowed the developer to pay off their debts (which were presumably incurred during development). This is depressingly common these days, and Towertale deserves far more mainstream success. Despite Steam tooting its own horn about how many games find success on their platform, a whole lot of deserving indies get buried by the sheer volume of garbage cluttering up the store, and the fact that something as polished as Towertale needs a console release to pay off development costs and raise the funds for the developer's next game speaks to a bunch of big problems. The problem of mainstream gamers who choose their games based on marketing that smaller developers/publishers can't afford. The problem of digital distributors that consistently bury these games so that they're even harder to find. The problem of reviewers/writers at larger outlets being so focused on covering big-name games that they fail to do anything to address the issue by highlighting smaller but nevertheless deserving games. I don't have any solutions to those problems, though I do occasionally consider jumping ship to a bigger site so that I can find and recommend games like this. In the meantime, the Nintendo Switch version of Towertale is available right now, so pick that up if you enjoy boss rush games. Read the full article
