Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Troia | Our Lady of the Rosary of Tróia (Grândola, Setúbal)
The festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Tróia (Our Lady of the Rosary of Tróia), held on the Tróia Peninsula in the municipality of Grândola, are a centuries-old tradition that has endured for over 300 years. Deeply rooted in the fishing communities of Setúbal and Grândola, these celebrations were originally initiated by fishermen as a tribute to their patron saint: Our Lady of the Rosary. In this particular catholic devotion, she is honoured not only as a spiritual protector but also as a guardian of seafarers, reflecting the close ties between the local population and the sea.
Taking place in August, the exact dates of the festivities depend on the tides of the Sado River. The focal point of the festivities is the Chapel of Our Lady of Tróia, which dates back to the 15th century. And while the event has modernised over time, it maintains important traditions, such as the camp at the Caldeira de Tróia (a lagoon that forms an inlet in Tróia peninsula) and memorial masses for deceased seafarers, highlighting its deep significance for the fishing community.
However, the key event lies in the “círio fluvial” (river pilgrimage), a procession of elaborately decorated boats that escort the image of Our Lady of the Rosary as it returns to Setúbal. This procession, that continues on land along the Tróia beach, symbolises both the faith and cultural heritage, uniting the entire community—both devout and non-religious participants.
