Ed drags a hand over his face. “Eight. Jesus fucking Christ. You were just a baby.”

They shrug, looking away. “It’s been a long time. It’s not a big deal.”

“Not a big deal! Jim, for fuck’s –“ Ed stops. Takes a breath, slows down. Makes his voice softer, refusing to let it rise into the shout that he was so close to. “I think it’s a big deal. A really big fucking deal, actually. I think you do too, or you wouldn’t be here.”

Another shrug. Their hands are so tight around their tea mug that he worries they might break it. “I just… don’t like to be alone for it. I usually just go out and get plastered and find someone who’ll fuck me up for a while. But I told you I wouldn’t do that while we’re doing… whatever it is we’re doing.” Their face twists. “But I fucked it all up, and hurt you, and I – I didn’t mean to hurt you. If I knew my dreams would get so bad, I wouldn’t have stayed.”

Ed studies them for a moment, then shakes his head. “Don’t be a dumbass.”

Jim gapes at him. “What?”

“I said, don’t be a dumbass. Don’t be self-sacrificing, either. You shouldn’t spend a shitty weekend alone just because you might get punchy in your sleep.”

“It’s not dumb to not want to hurt you!” They’re snarling now, angry, but not necessarily at him. At themself, Ed thinks. “I hit you in the mouth, and I know that I fucked up your knee –“

“My knee has been fucked up for twenty five years,” Ed cuts in. “And I’m the one who chose to stay and wake you up. Fuck, I could’ve just left, Jim. I didn’t want to, so I didn’t.”

Summary:

"I came here to –“ Jim's teeth bare a little “- see if you were free this weekend.”

Ed mentally checks his calendar. He’d wanted to go see a film, but that’s about it. And it’s not like he wouldn’t set everything aside for Jim, anyway. “I’m free any evening you want.”

Jim squirms a little in their seat, refusing to make eye contact. “… I was hoping you might be free for the whole weekend.”

It stops Ed in his tracks. He stares at them, mouth open. “The whole weekend?”

Their scowl deepens, if that was even possible. “I want to try – the thing.”

“Gonna have to be a little more specific than that, Jimbo.

Jim’s cheeks darken a little. They look away again. Ed probably shouldn’t find it so endearing how embarrassed they get over being forced to say what they want, but so help him, he does. “The edging thing. Like… orgasm denial and shit.”

Some tender Jim/Ed WIP Wednesday for y'all <3

(From the next in my OFMD rare ship Remington Steele AU series "the crown of love is not upon me", in which Jim is a detective, Ed is a con man/thief, and they fall into a messy BDSM relationship. Please heed the tags/warnings on the series.)

Jim reaches up and grabs his wrist. Ed stares as they pull his hand away from their jaw, worry creeping in that he’s read the whole thing wrong. That they didn’t want his hand on their throat, or the order, what will come next.

But instead of pushing him away, Jim tilts their head, pressing a kiss to the centre of Edward’s palm.

It’s the softest kiss they’ve ever given him. Tender. Lingering.

And for a moment, just for a moment, Ed swears his heart stops beating. But then Jim nods, and stands, and they’re walking towards the kitchen while Ed’s heart picks up again, starts racing, every emotion known to man flooding through him.

He only has ten, fifteen, twenty seconds to compose himself before Jim is back, coiling the black rope neatly around their forearm, like they know what to do with it. Except, they do, just maybe not in this context. He’s seen them climb up the side of a building before. He knows what they can do.

Jim hands him the coiled rope. Slowly, carefully, keeping eye contact the whole time – they kneel at his feet.
