Turns out magical cure for anxieties related to drawing is doodling your favourite boy ever whodda thunk
I have to ask!
Has anyone else noticed how every series in Pokemon has one rival, whose japanese name starts with the letters Sh-?
I mean...
Shigeru
Shuu
Shinji
Shootie
Shouta
Sun & Moon doesn’t have such a character yet, but... get my point?
There’s a god damn pattern with main rivals having the letters Sh- in the name aah ;A; I mean sure, Shuu is Haruka’s Rival but I don’t think Satoshi had any main rival in AG now did he?
Why-is-this-bothering-me-so-much?? In a good way I mean?
em-exceeds-change-zearu replied to your post: Man, honestly, say what you will about the Kalos...
okay the thought of manon travelling with ash and co never occurred to me but that sounds so precious? ash is so good when he has someone to mentor and manon was over the moon about the story about him on top of the prism tower with gabby so it’d work? maybe giving serena an earlier start to figuring out what she wanted to do by helping out and bonding with manon too? also let bonnie actually bond with ash and manon for a energetic student mentor triad of terror? god…
Ooh, so I think I worded things a bit badly, but---I didn’t mean have her as a part of Ash’s squad, per se, but more that she would be a regularly reoccurring character that he meets, interacts with, and mentors whenever they meet up!
Specifically, in my re-imagining, Manon travels with Shouta (and together they are #GreenTeam), who as we know is already Ash’s primary Kalosean rival. Both Manon and Shouta are the same age (ten), and they’re both beginning trainers; particularly in a situation where we let Ash, Serena, and Clemont all be the thirteen / fourteen-year-olds they behave like, it’d make a lot of sense for Ash to be a pseudo-rival for Shouta and Manon, both of whom are younger than him and just starting out. (Serena is also just starting out, but there’s nothing saying someone can’t become a trainer a bit later in life. I imagine that Alan didn’t leave on his journey until he was twelve, for instance.) But even we don’t age Ash, Serena, and Clemont up, having Shouta and Manon be the two newbie trainers that Ash regularly meets, interacts, and battles with / mentors could still be a very fun dynamic, particularly when you imagine how this partnership between Shouta and Manon might have been fostered in the first place.
I mean, if you think about it, it could happen very easily. Shouta does still have a bit of experience on Manon when they first meet (or rather, when they would first meet) considering that he picked up his starter pokémon prior to traveling to Kalos, but even then, his treecko is still . . . well, a treecko when we meet him, so he clearly isn’t that experienced. Nonetheless, he’s smart, studious, and sharp; he seems to know what he’s doing, and I think that would certainly appeal to Manon, who is a newbie in every sense of the word and would no doubt be very impressed by whatever knowledge and experience Shouta does have. When you consider that Shouta has already met Steven Stone once and hopes to meet him again, that gives Manon even more incentive to want to travel with him, because there’s a good chance he’ll meet Steven (and maybe even learn about mega evolution!), and if she’s with him, then she’ll get to meet him as well. In a sharp deviation from TSME 1, Shouta would actually have no problems with traveling with her. Whereas Alan did not want to be her travel companion and eventually just gave in after he saw that his “no” and “don’t follow me” rebuffs weren’t going to be respected no matter what he did, nothing we’ve seen from Shouta suggests that he’d have a problem having a traveling companion. If anything, he’d probably welcome the company, particularly since he and Manon are roughly on the same level and both have a penchant for grass-types (Hari-san obviously, but I also like to think Manon would get a bulbasaur that she could mega evolve). I think he’d be open to traveling with her, which means that from the start Manon would have a traveling companion who not only wouldn’t try to ditch her at every opportunity, but would also be excited to traveling with her, making for a much more fun adventure.
On top of all this, since they’re both starting out, Shouta wouldn’t be Manon’s crutch, either. Again, he has a bit of experience on her, but Manon would still need to battle and learn on her own, rather than having to duck behind the nearest rock to be protected from whatever battle is about to unfold right in front of her. Since Shouta isn’t being used as a Flare agent, he wouldn’t get into as many life-threatening situations anyway, which means that the battles Manon would face would be much, much more on her skill level, thus allowing her to build confidence in herself as she grows as a trainer. So not only would Manon not be railroading someone else’s boundaries, but she also wouldn’t be leaning wholesale on someone else and depending on them to protect her. Instead, she’d learn how to protect herself and would have the opportunity to build up her own team. Furthermore, whenever Shouta and Steven meet again (which is sometime after the Snowbelle arc, but prior to the League), Steven gives Shouta a Key Stone and Sceptilite. There’s nothing at all saying that Manon couldn’t get her Key Stone and Venusaurite at the same time. Thus, she obtains mega evolution in canon, at the same time that Shouta does.
Since she’s traveling with Shouta, this gives her plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with Ash & the squad, because after all, Shouta himself does. Both Shouta and Manon could go after the Gym badges (and thus they could both enter the League), and both of them could battle against Ash at different points. This is what I mean when I say that Ash could mentor Manon; I think that he would see a lot of himself in her, back when he was first starting out (very energetic, determined to be the very best, but also rather clueless with little idea of what she’s doing, even though her heart is in the right place generally), and I think that would endear her to him and would make him want to give her advice / guidance whenever they meet up. Manon, as you said, already knows of him thanks to the story of what happened on Prism Tower, and so I think she’d be super eager to get whatever advice she could from him, to learn from his accomplishments, and also perhaps one day beat him in battle herself. She’s still not traveling with him (gotta rep that #GreenTeam), but she’s very excitedly running up to his group whenever they happen to cross paths. She could still bond with Serena and Bonnie much earlier on, as well, especially if Ash, Serena, and Clemont were all aged up by three years, meaning that Manon would be in-between Serena and Bonnie, age-wise. But even if she’s not, again, she could still bond with them as we saw a little bit of during the League arc, and perhaps could even battle Serena sometimes as well, to see if she can beat a pokémon that has a type advantage of hers.
And in this way, she still could meet Alan! Alan first meets Ash after he sees him battling Shouta. While Shouta leaves before Alan interacts with the group (and thus Manon goes with him), there’s nothing saying that they couldn’t stick around for a bit longer in this version of events. If nothing else, if Manon is collecting badges and going on a proper journey here, who’s to say that she doesn’t enter the League? Picture a League scenario where, instead of battling Trevor in the first round, Alan battles Manon instead. She sends her Mega Venusaur against Mega Lizardon X. She loses, but it’s a good battle, and so they shake hands at the end of it and Alan tells her that she did a great job. She’s still disappointed, but Ash consoles her afterward and tells her about his Kanto League loss and how quickly he was booted, and that makes her feel better as she resolves to try harder next time (and maybe beat Alan in a rematch someday, too). That said, of course she doesn’t leave Lumiose after that, and so this time, she’s able to join the other rival kids (Shouta naturally, but also Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna) as they help with the Lumiose City evacuation during the Flare crisis, using Hari-san and her Mega Venusaur (Fushi-kun, in my headcanon) to actually be active and help. (Though staying true to her character, she’s doing this because she wants to protect Shouta and keep him safe as a first priority, and he’s not leaving without helping, but still.)
The only sticking point we’d have to work around is how Squishy gets freed if Hari-san is not at Fleur-De-Lis Laboratories to free him, but honestly, that can be worked around. For instance, we know that Steven calls up Professor Sycamore to tell him about what Lysandre has been having Alan do (he straight up tattled on Lysandre, it’s great), and we know that Sycamore went to Fleur-De-Lis Laboratories as a direct result of that. In that case, perhaps something happens which results in Gabrielle getting separated from Sycamore somehow (maybe some equipment malfunctions and there’s an explosion, maybe she wanders off while Sycamore is distracted talking to Lysandre, either-or), and because both garchomp and Zygarde are ground/dragon-types, she’s drawn to him. Gabrielle frees Squishy, but is zapped by his energy (whatever it is) and falls comatose, and therefore we still get a similar set-up where Squishy is freed and Alan is determined to rescue a comatose pokémon. Only this time, rather than being motivated by guilt because he has managed to view the situation in such a way that makes it his fault (even though it wasn’t his fault, even in canon, but nonetheless that’s how he saw it), he’s instead motivated by shock and grief because he has loved that garchomp since she was a little bitty gible he brought home to the lab, and Professor Sycamore is his unofficially adoptive father, and he signed up into Lysandre’s service to protect Sycamore in the first place, and damn it he is not going to let them down, you’ll see. So even then, even though the story has to be modified because Hari-san and Manon wouldn’t be there in TSME 4, ultimately it’s a very easy thing to work around, which ends up working out better for all involved characters. (Especially Manon, since in this version of events she gets to have many more appearances in the main story, actually gets to train a team of pokémon, gets to participate in the League, and is never sidelined.)
So yeah, if I were rewriting the story to make improvements on it, that’s one of the primary improvements I’d make. I think that it would be better for every single involved character, and would make the story much more enjoyable overall.
