Detroit Half Marathon Training W3D6: 10 miles
I’m supposed to have my long run today, but my Achilles is pretty swollen and there’s a slight discomfort when I walk so I’m going to skip this run. I fucking hate skipping runs.
I’m fairly certain my hopes of running a half marathon this year are out the window. My Achilles tendinitis is killing my running vibe. It sucks. I was just starting to get really good (by my standards) at running. I actually love running. I’m one of those rare souls who prefers cardio over weights.
I’m going to try to set up a doctor’s appointment sometime this upcoming week to see what the deal-io is. I’m not expecting good news though. If I can’t run, I’m going to start lifting weights on a more regular basis. Maybe I’ll get jacked and finally get the abs I’ve always wanted. The half marathon will be there next year.

Jerk
No, am not calling anyone a jerk. I'm refering to the execution of a technique in a fast, even sudden fashion.
My sister trained with me yesterday. There were two other new girls at the gym who trained with us. One was my friend from law school. My sister's elbow got injured from the armbar drills last night. She partnered with my friend.
Having been the same way myself, I know newbies can be so rough. I don't think they do it intentionally. It's just that they don't know how painful or effective their technique can be. And sometimes they want to do the techniques fast probably feeling awkward or impatient. They don't realize they're prone to more injuries that way.
I do not think my friend even knows she hurt my sister's elbow. I know that the problem wasn't that she was using strength and going too hard on my sister. It was that she was jerking the movement, doing the techniques too fast.
Next time I teach newbies, first lessons will be "Don't jerk the technique. Go slow!"
Back to that Thin Line
Had a great run on Saturday, nearly 21 miles. This was my last long run before the Seattle Marathon on June 23. I have great friends in Seattle and it's a beautiful city -- though honestly the course looks questionable (doesn't touch Lake Union at all?).
Anyway, on Saturday afternoon, my right tibia started barking. I could feel it happening, but was out with the kids and didn't have a lot of recourse. By Sunday AM, it was definitely full on pain. Panic feeling: stress fracture! Damn those overuse injuries ... Hopeful thought: Just some random shin splint like deal from too many miles in too short a window.
Took Sunday off, which prevented me from breaking 60 miles in a week (I finished at 55); did some Icy/Hot on Saturday night and then some actual ICE on Sunday. (When it doubt, it's inflammation and runners should ice, right?) Felt better this AM. Then I had to jog to catch the train. Jog mind you, not run ... and barking again. Had dreams of crushing 400s at Kezar on Tuesday morning; those are getting kicked to the curb as you have to listen to your body right?
Key is to get healthy because the ultimate goal is not Kezar on Tuesday; it's not running 60 miles in a week or 200 miles in a month. Those are all stops on the Brad Radke World Tour most likely, I grant you (the patron saint of this site after all is Saint Brad); heck, it's not even June 23 in Seattle ... the real dance date is December 2, 2012
