I blacked out a little and made this Steven Universe/Lars Barriga picrew…
Footnote: I can’t claim to ship these two, exactly, but I also like the idea that they have something more queer than platonic friendship.
I just got this amazing Larsadie peice from
@suund3w on twitter
! it was a pleasure working them and it exceeded expectations as always. can't wait to work with them again! i already know what i wanna do with them! love their take on lars and sadie too! #StevenUniverse
The Lars is trans rabbit hole is a deep one that I am absolutely baffled to have not discovered before. Just. Wow.
12 year old me: I think this character is trans because I deeply relate to them and they are fictional so I am allowed to project a little
Some 27 year old: you have literally ruined my life. You have shot me in the chest and I bleed out on the street. Your words slice into me like a knife and I will never recover from your words and your cruelty
One of the things I enjoy most about media is that it can be changed from it's original point of creation into something different by the agreement of a collective.
Take Pixar's Luca as my first example:
Technically the characters here we're not queer upon it's creation, but with how many people say they are because they see the community struggles and emotions reflected back by the movie change the entire meaning of the movie to be just that, queer. (Side note- Luca gave me In a Heartbeat vibes the whole time)
Example #2:
People seeing Steven Universe's Lars and Gravity Falls' Dipper as transgender. Technically the characters were created without this intent, but with so many people in agreeance it's as if its true anyway. It's overwritten the original idea in a way.
This isn't a bad thing, if that's what you've picked up from my post. It's inspiring when it comes to media and works of art/story. It means a large group of people have connected with the characters on a deeper level, finding a comfy place to say "Hey, look! That's like my friend/myself".
Interpretation is a powerful and wondrous thing. I first realized it's power in middle school when I won a writing contest in class, but the teacher read my story in a completely different tone than I'd imagined upon writing it. It wasn't better or worse, it was just different. Everyone really liked it, that made me happy as a creator.

Lars supporting Steven
Trans! Lars and Trans Allegory! Steven
-Steven told Lars about the diamonds referring to him as Pink
-Lars assured Steven who he was: Steven Universe, not Rose Quartz or Pink Diamond, just himself
-Lars was very insistent that Steven talk to him if he ever doubted himself
After I Am My Monster
-Lars hears about Steven’s breakdown
-He is immensely concerned
-He bombards Steven with love and support
-He tells Steven he can talk to him if he needs to
After Future
-Lars calls Steven to check up on him
-He also visits sometimes
(I love these boys, incase you couldn't tell)
