Using transcribers has ruined me outside of the classroom. Now when people start talking to me and I can’t understand them I automatically look at my computer screen.

Here’s to all the fanartists/transcribers/fanfic writers out there
If you draw your own characters/scenes, YOU ARE AN ARTIST.
If you draw fanart, YOU ARE STILL AN ARTIST.
If you compose your own music, YOU ARE A MUSICIAN.
If you transcribes your own version of someone else’s music, YOU ARE STILL A MUSICIAN.
If you write your own characters/plot, YOU ARE A WRITER.
If you write fanfiction, YOU ARE STILL A WRITER.
Artistic ability is still artistic ability no matter what you do with it and it sucks that not everyone realizes that.

I never quite realized how much I rely on technology as a deaf person until today as I was getting ready for bed. Plug in my laptop so I can actually get transcription for tomorrow, put my hearing aids in the dryer so that they don’t fizzle out and die on me, put my pen on the charger....
things that make being deaf in college slightly easier:
- get your accommodations figured out before the semester starts. Trust me on this, please
- if you can’t get an interpreter/ transcriber last minute google docs is your friend
- you’re going to have to fight for what you need, sometimes tooth and nail, practicing the reasons for why you need what you need helps when you have to go and talk with the big scary person
- always carry batteries if you wear HA/CIs, the last thing you want is dead batteries when someone is trying to tell you something important
- don’t be afraid to ask for different accommodations if the ones you are using aren’t helpful, ain’t nothing going to work if your accommodations are all screwy
- labs are a lot easier with interpreters than transcribers, it’s too hard to move around the room and do experiments and labs when you have to carry your computer with you and the transcriber won’t be able to hear anything happening across the room
- don’t be afraid to ask your study groups to slow down and do things differently if you need. You want to understand what is happening, your grade depends on it
- being subconscious about your hearing aids makes other people even more weird about talking to you. Just own it.
- ask for interpreters/ transcribers even if you aren’t sure how helpful they’ll be for seminars/ other stuff. You can always cancel them later if you decide they are’t helpful but it is a lot harder to get someone last minute if you decide you want an interpreter/transcriber later.
- people are curious, sometimes it is easier to answer their questions then deal with ignorance later on
- don’t waste your time on people who are rude about your deafness or who use you, you don’t need that drama
- teach your roommates simple signs, they don’t have to end up knowing how to sign everything but it is a lot easier when they can tell you it is your turn to clean the toilet, or that you’re out of soap.
- be nice to people, you want the people in your classes to help you out when you miss something, be nice
IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THINGS TO ADD TO THE LIST, PLEASE DO
Using a transcriber is like this: (Unintelligible) (Can’t hear/ can’t understand) Male student: (Joke/ joking) *class laughing* [On board]
Shout out to all the people that have transcribed the Malevolent episodes.
Incredibly helpful for me who does not process audio the best and also who writes fic and needs to check details.
