Trans Twitter Wins: Scarlett Johannson Officially Backs Out of Playing Dante “Tex” Gill

ScarJo has announced she's bowing out of "Rub & Tug"

“Scarlett Johansson has officially ducked and run from Rub & Tug. When it was announced on July 2nd that ScarJo would be playing the role of Dante “Tex” Gill, a transgender man and the center of the film, backlash was swift. Today, Johansson thanked the transgender community for raising the conversation and bowed out of the project.

"In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project," Johansson said in a statement to OUT Magazine.

Rub & Tug is based on the life of Gill, who ran a string of Pittsburgh massage parlors in the '70s, and by modern definitions lived their life as a transgender man, as recounted by their own obituary.

"Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive,” the statement went on. “I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues."

This is an about-face from her previous statement when pressed about taking the roll. Back then, Bustlereported that Johansson’s rep had said that critics could “be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.” All of these cisgender actors have previously played trans people.

@gayprincepeach me too, my friend. It isn't even just because he did literally everything in his power to "get into character" in the worst way possible, affecting others negatively during SS filming, the result IS trash. I kept watching more and more scenes out of morbid curiousity and the longer he was in screen the worse everything got. I was willing to cut him a break for the "I'm not gonna kill ya scene" but then that fucking strip club scene happened and I can't handle this movie anymore to ever finish it, fuck that. Haha, but I haven't even mentioned my real problem with Jared Leto. I can't recall whether the director or Jared himself said "there are no transgender actors", but Jared DID state "only I, with my superior acting skills, could really, truly pull off this role," as opposed to an individual with this ACTUAL IDENTITY. So now my goal is, however I can, to portray the Joker, the true Clown Prince of Crime with all my favourite little touches in homage to the REAL actors who have protrayed the character fantastically (Hamill, Nicholson, Romero, etc.), and also to add my own little twist to the character, as well. Ah, but clearly, I can't do that, because as a trans actor, I'm not actually a thing, right? Sorry for the long post, now that I've rested I have to elaborate and whine 'coz I'm a butthurt fanboy. GREAT CALL - use a cis straight guy that sexually harassed trans actresses on Transparent (to the point where he was thrown off the show), to justify why you should take a role from a trans man. That is trash behavior of the lowest level.

And JARED FUCKING LETO?!?! The guy who didn’t mention trans people WHEN HE WON THE OSCAR FOR PLAYING A TRANS WOMAN?!? Another stellar example.
