TRANSRAMCOA & PROGRAMMED TIPS
Emotional & cognitive cues
Loss of agency / conflict: frequently says things like βI donβt know if that was meβ or βI felt like I had to.β
Confusion & memory gaps: vague about stretches of time, struggles to place events.
Hypervigilance: easily startled, scans rooms, unsettled by sudden noises or certain words.
Dissociation: moments of blankness, zoning out, or describing a feeling of watching themselves. Describe non-graphically: βItβs like Iβm behind glass.β
Internal conflict: shame about actions they canβt explain; guilt and fear mixed with relief when instructions stop.
Attachment fragility: swings from clinging to withdrawal β tests whether others will stay.
Behavioral cues
Automatic responses: brief, seemingly out-of-context phrases or gestures that surprise them afterward, example: a sudden head tilt, a whispered word, or a tiny physical action you canβt recall initiating.
Reassurance seeking: asks for confirmation often (βDid I do that? Are you still here?β).
Avoidance of triggers: certain locations, smells, or words cause visible discomfort. You may ask to leave.
Ritualized coping: repetitive, non-harmful actions to feel grounded (counting breaths, rubbing a bracelet, repeating a chosen grounding phrase).
How to make it believable without graphic detail
Use sensory, emotional language rather than technical descriptions: βWhen I hear that sound, my chest goes tight and everything becomes foggy.β
Keep references to βprogrammingβ vague and subjective: βI was made to obey... thatβs how it felt.β Donβt explain mechanisms.
Micro-commands: you mayr suddenly say a short command the group once used, harmless and non-actionable, example: βStay.β β then look startled and apologetic.
Trigger phrase reaction: hearing a word causes you to freeze for a second, blink a lot, or step back. (Show discomfort; ask to stop if itβs used.)
Automatic smile or nod: a brief, out-of-context expression that you notice and hate when it happens.
Counting/grounding: to self-soothe they quietly count 4β3β2β1 under breath, or touch a token on your person.
Fragmented memory: βI remember a hallwayβ¦ then nothing. I wake up with bruises in my head, but not on my skin.β (Metaphorical, non-graphic.)
