I have to translate it... Nay...
i decided to translate my poem that i sent to the competition, since everyone was so sweet and i love sharing poetry. please do read the citations as translating poems is a devil in itself.
and here's the translation:
depression hides in my joints
and [in] my left knee that hurts every time i bend it
(i will never try this much again)
(it is never enough)
/
my anger, again, [hides] in my hands
(i never understood / realised what happened)
(my palm burns still)
/
stress [hides] in my neck and stomach
(you and i both, are wilting)
(you, at least, get sun[light])
/
the wounds [are] everywhere
/
everywhere
/
¹*here (left knee) is my pessimism and
a bit above that (right hip) my father's rejection and
a little higher still (nape) my mom's perfectionism
/
²*and i am a mosaic, the floor of your faith,
[made] from oil and ³*soil from my village
and photographs, cut up
(so that you can only see the scenery, not the faces)
/
i remind you of your child, your mother, the friend you lost in 2014
/
⁴*years later it remains inexplicable
no matter how many colourful rocks you see inside me, sea glass, your colourful eyes
/
my bones creak and, with you, i remain pitch-black
citations / notes:
¹* in the greek version, before "here" is the exclamation "να" which is used in every day life to show the listener something, or bring their attention to something. here, it is used to bring a theatrical effect to the poem, almost as if i am pointing out every one of those "wounds" on my body.
²* greece is a predominantly orthodox christian nation. by referencing the mosaics often found on the floors of orthodox churches and the faith itself, i am bringing some religious imagery into the poem, and directly speaking about our roots as a nation. identifying as the floor on which prayer often happens is both humbling and an ego boost, it means that the "you" mentioned in the line can not experience god without me.
³* more than half of greece's population, especially the youth, lives in the 2 major cities of athens and thessaloniki. however, many of their older relatives live in the numerous villages of the country. saying that i am made of soil from my village dives deeper into not only my roots and family tree, but also the traditions and customs of the area (greece is a city with very rich culture, that is unique to even every regional unit). carrying soil from your home with you means that you carry your roots and ancestors with you as well (see cretans referencing carrying soil from their island to the rest of greece, so everywhere can feel like home).
⁴* referencing my favourite poet's, giorgos seferis' poem "interlude of joy", which you can read here, and especially the last lines of
[“Inexplicable,” you said, “inexplicable.
I don’t understand people:
no matter how much they play with colors
they all remain pitch-black.”]

Nyt ois aika ottaa käännöskysymykset osa 1 liittyen tuohon suomalaisten videopuheluun!
Eli kertokaa ehdotuksia, miten kääntäsitte seuraavanlaiset jutut. Ylipäänsä mietin et pitääkö miun ns. riisua nuo kuvaavat sanat ihan perusmuotoihin, et esim.

Me speaking in English vs Me translating english into my MOTHER LANGUAGE
L'HOMME MYSTÈRE
It makes me think of the “Guess Who” games tbh... I would agree to it, in a context where Edward is literally an untouchable villain who has never revealed his face to the public, but everyone knows who he is, even if they don’t know his face. This is perhaps more fitting to the Telltale and Arkham games.
I find hard to take that name seriously when you’re literally showing off how mysterious you are via your question mark suits. In that case, I find Enygma fits better because... well. You’re handing them for the sake of proving something, and for show. It’s about being incredibly smug about it. In which case Le Sphinx is also fitting.So... ok, in a sense I agree to both. I just feel like they need an appropriate context.
