Continuing the fuckery from the extension petition, today's entry is the Graduate School and its dean saying 'Actually, you need to defend by 12/23/26, and we will tell you at some point when your dissertation must be uploaded.'

There is basically a 3 month minimum of admin and committee lead time needed for a defense. 4 months is preferable.

To my knowledge, this is unprecedented. The other person in my cohort says her deadline is May, which is what she requested.

I have emailed all of this to my advisor (not included on the original email from the grad school with the official letter). And responded asking about the fact that it ends wishing me luck on my master's degree completion and if there was some sort of misunderstanding happening and if not, wtf. and then sent all of that to my outside reader and (hopeful) outside chair for their advice.

This was all at like noon today. I still have not heard anything from anyone. The only one who got anything done was our department coordinator, who manually enrolled me in the no credits class I have to take and pay for because the system said I had registered for it too many times. I am still within the allowed time to completion.

Now the dog won't stop scratching at me and a cat is between me and my laptop because I'm also at my parents' for the month.

My advisor remains deeply unhelpful. His response was "well. I guess that's the new deadline. Email my secretary to set up meetings. It's going to be a busy couple of months."

Cool.

I'm definitely not doing my best to not cry and despair. Thanks.

This reminds me of the fact that "Ancient Egypt" goes back so many thousands of years, that the most recent "Ancient Egyptians" were already studying (even more) Ancient Egypt.

For context, the last Pharaoh, Cleopatra VII, lived in the 1st century BCE. Prince Khaemweset, known as "the first egyptologist", was as ancient to her as the pyramids and tombs he was studying were ancient to him.

I take back any good feelings I had about a barely supportive advisor.

So, we have to fill out an extension petition if we are past our sixth years. Fine, I've done it before. I know he is going to be away from his email June 29-30. I incorporated his edits to my responses and send the completed form to him on the 25th.

The form was due June 30.

I just checked and I still have a registration hold on my account and our Director of Graduate Studies confirmed that she never received it from him (her signature is required).

Also, my most recent draft that he (and the whole department, because of workshop things) received in early March? He said he will start reading it when he gets back from vacation July 7.

I am going to scream.

Update: He emailed and said he sent it along. And that he hopes that the date on his signature explains the delay.

I am still going to scream. I know he has a lot on his plate. But. I find I don't super care.
