1929 saw the birth Sparkman & Stephens and the thoroughbred SV Dorade. Immortalized by Russ Kramer on the home stretch to win the 2013 Transpac, again... a full 77 years after her first win.
Tonga
Vava'u, Tonga's most northern island group, is a beautiful crew rest and provisioning stop on a southern Transpac journey. Great people, surprisingly good supplies stores, and the diving is fantastic. Time your arrival for late fall tho and you'll be 'in town' for humpback mating and calving season. Swimming with whales is pretty heavily regulated but there's still plenty of opportunity. Def a must do.
Transiting the Panama Canal is an amazing experience, even more so in a "small" ship. Watching the first set of massive lock doors slowly swing closed behind you is a little terrifying. I'm not sure what's more unnerving; being tucked in solo behind a container ship or tanker that towers above you or being rafted to two other vessels when you're not the command vessel, meaning you're a multimillion dollar fender at the mercy of a captain whose experience is unknown.
But, it's when you finally spill out into the Pacific that the weight of the adventure before you really hits home. Whether your plan is to forge west and island hop, turn south toward, and eventually ride, the Roaring 40s, Furious 50s, and Screaming 60s, or turn north with the Last Frontier and Northwest Passage in mind, once thing is guaranteed. You will never be the same again.
