The Treasure in Earthen Vessels

2 Corinthians 4:7–11

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

 Boy, there is sure a great number of things that can capture our attention. We can become totally preoccupied with our jar of clay. Our earthen body can alert us to its needs, wants and desires, to the point that we ignore the thoughts of God or of eternal things. We can silence the whispers of the Holy Spirit so that our hearts are hardened to his voice. We can forget that we have this particular treasure within our hearts.

 God has a plan to demonstrate to us and to others that the victories we win are not the result of any inner personal strength or special wisdom we have in ourselves apart from him. But rather they are sourced in “the extraordinary (quality of the) power” that lies within God himself and that he manifests or demonstrates through our lives. One on one God is no match for the devil. It is no contest. But God chooses to defeat the enemy through our lives by revealing his power through us. In Psalm 112, a man blessed by the Lord is described. He has many things said about him, but I love what is said of his heart:

  Psalm 112:7–8

He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

 His heart is “steady” => What the Hebrew literally says is that His heart is supported, sustained, and helped. The psalms are peppered with many such uses:

  Psalm 3:5

I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.

  Psalm 37:17

For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.

  Psalm 37:24

though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.

  Psalm 54:4

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.

  Psalm 119:116

Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope!

  Psalm 145:14

The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.

 At the approach of our enemies, we can have an unafraid heart which is steady. In the midst of Paul’s experiences, he had many such breaking points:

  2 Corinthians 4:8–9

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

 Amid such bad news and adversarial assaults, God supported and sustained his heart. But only through the work of the cross in him. He carried the treasure of God’s support and solution for his condition. The earthen vessel must carry the treasure of the work of the cross so that the life of Christ may be manifested or revealed within our lives. Christ within us is our treasure. Christ through us is our blessing to others. May our hearts be fixed and firm so that we can truly trust the Lord in our troubles and times of need. We need to learn to boldly say:

  Psalm 54:4

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.

 Lord Jesus, Thank you for your decisive work in our lives. We hunger for the freedom and liberty within that only your spirit can give. Be our treasure, our helper, and our sustainer today so that we can stand in the heat of the battle with hearts fixed firmly upon you. Amen!!!
