Day 2 of Hero and Partner week! I was going to do a lil gardening scene for the Flower prompt but then I realised... there's not a single opposable thumb in this team...
More engineering and furgonomics type concept art for I Can Fix Him!
Mostly, this one is focused on the setting of Treasure Town, and Team Starbeam's base at Sharpedo Bluff.
The climate there is in the subtropical zone btw! Treasure Town is kind of in the middle of the continent so I see it being fairly warm but not super extremely so. Sometimes it gets a little bit cold, but it doesn't tend to snow, and during the summers it gets pretty hot and they have monsoon kinda weather often.
ALSO I got the idea for spira bread from Jay Eaton's RttS! The spira bread here is a little different, being made with more seaweed/algae than RttS's spira bread, but that's where I got the base idea from! (speaking of, if you like these kind of world building engineering ergonomics speculative biology kind of topics, I highly recommend reading said comic! it's a wonderful read and currently on-going! Here's a link to the comic proper!)
Also if you've never heard of an archimedes' screw/screw pump, it's one of these! They are a kind of pump that can be made with entirely mechanical components, and thus well within the sort of medieval ish setting of PMD!
A random idea popped into my head and I'm ASTOUNDED by how fitting it is:
PMMM Rebellion's plot but it's a PMD Explorers post-game AU
ok hear me out
As the credits roll, the partner is crying on the beach, missing the hero/player character, and that's when Dialga brings them back, right? Well, in this AU, things go differently. Partner (who I'm imagining as a male Treecko, an ancestor of Grovyle) keeps crying until he passes out from exhaustion right there in the sand, and in his dreams, he gets a vision of the wish-granting Pokemon Jirachi (actually Darkrai under an illusion).
"Jirachi" claims that, out of gratitude to Partner and Hero for saving the world, he'll grant Partner one wish, anything he wants. Partner immediately asks for Hero to be brought back, and "Jirachi" agrees, but he warns Partner that the dream Pokemon Cresselia may take issue and attack, since she believes that wishes of this caliber should be the realm of dreams alone. Partner assures "Jirachi" that he can deal with Cresselia just fine; after all, when he and Hero are together, they can do anything! "Jirachi" smiles and says he'll leave it to them, then, and then he pulls Partner into a distorted dream world, changing his memories in the process. Bidoof is close enough to also be dragged in, as well as Wigglytuff, Sunflora, Croagunk, and Loudred, who all went to check on Partner when he didn't come back in time for dinner. The bubble-blowing Krabby and some random Pokemon living in Beach Cave/the ocean are also dragged in.
The actual story would begin with Partner living his "normal life" in Bubble Town, a small beach town mainly populated by Krabby and other sea Pokemon, with the exception of the creepy Duskull who runs the bank. Bubble Town is also home to the Wigglytuff Guild, which Treecko has just joined as an apprentice. He quickly forms a strong friendship with Hero (who I imagine to be a soft-spoken, somewhat eerie female Cyndaquil with odd blue eyes the color of time gears) and ends up joining her team, though he feels incompetent next to her other teammate, Grovyle. Besides, Grovyle keeps asking him all these weird questions about his life before the guild...
One day, the team is assigned a special mission: to track down and kill an infamous outlaw named Cresselia. Due to everyone's altered memories, they don't see this as abnormal, although Wigglytuff gets a weird bad feeling about the whole thing, for which Chimecho makes him some calming (read: drugged) tea and perfect apple tarts.
Meanwhile, Cresselia keeps slipping from Partner's team's grasp, and they come back every day having failed again. Everything seems to be breaking down; the Guildmaster is sickly and always tired, all the apprentices are on edge, Grovyle is acting weirder by the day, Chimecho's behavior is becoming more and more openly creepy, the banker is getting way too nosy about the team's mission, and Cresselia is still lurking somewhere close by...and also, something is tugging in the back of Partner's mind, telling him that something's not right about Bubble Town. Or is it Bubble Village? Bubble City? He swears the layout is changing somehow...
When Duskull, then Grovyle, casually mention a place called Treasure Town, Partner can't stop thinking about it. When he looks, he can't find it on a map; in fact, he can't find any maps showing a bigger area than the distance from the beach to the mountains. As an explorer, he itches to investigate, but he has this awful feeling that Hero might be put in danger if he gets in too deep. Chimecho is being vaguely threatening as well, telling Partner that he can't get distracted, he has to kill Cresselia and complete his mission before it's too late. With Wigglytuff sleeping most of the time, Chimecho is pretty much in charge, so Partner has to go behind her back.
Due to his bad feeling, he doesn't tell his teammates what he's thinking; instead, he asks Bidoof to take him to his home village over the mountains. However, when they cross the foggy mountain peak and descend, they find themselves right back at the edge of Bubble Metropolis where they'd started. They try again; same result. Now very much freaked out, they try going around the mountains by rowboat, but once again, they pass through the fog and emerge back in Bubbleville. This is what really starts to jog Partner's true memories. He asks Bidoof what day it is, what month, what season, and they both come to the realization that time doesn't pass at all in this place they're trapped in; the sky does grow darker at "night," but it's more like a light switch being turned off than the sun setting. Speaking of the sun, where is it?
Partner and Bidoof agree to start asking similar questions of the other guild members (minus the suspicious-acting Chimecho) so everyone will realize something's very wrong, and they try that as the next few days go by. Partner goes about his mission like normal so Chimecho won't suspect a thing, but as time passes, he remembers more and more about everything wrong with the situation. He lives in Treasure Town, not Bubble Paradise. Exploration teams sometimes arrest outlaws, but they're never sent to kill them -- and what did Cresselia even do, anyway? Where are Chatot, Corphish, Dugtrio, and Diglett? How come Duskull is trapped with everyone, but none of the other shopkeepers are? While not-so-subtly interrogating Duskull, Partner suddenly recalls the Time Gears, the Planet's Paralysis, and how Hero and Grovyle sacrificed themselves and their timeline to avert it. But there was a certain Pokemon who stood in their way, and evolved from the same line as the real banker...
"Isn't that right, Dusknoir?!"
Dusknoir emerges from his illusion and agrees, then tries to explain how he turned to Grovyle's side, but Partner isn't having it, calling him a liar and accusing him of stopping time in this location. He attacks, and the two fight until Grovyle arrives to stop them. He confirms that Dusknoir was telling the truth, but Partner is still suspicious, saying that he doesn't even know if they're the real Dusknoir and Grovyle -- after all, didn't those two cease to exist? Grovyle says that by that logic, Hero isn't real either, and that Partner should go talk to her; if he can tell any Pokemon apart from an illusion, it's her. He also tells Partner that time does not pass in this area because it's not a real part of the world, but a dream brought to life, and asks him to give a thought to just whose dream it is. As Partner runs off, Grovyle and Dusknoir hurry to get Wigglytuff away from Chimecho and warn the other apprentices.
After hours of wandering through the increasingly complex and distorted labyrinth that is Bubble Rift, Partner is found by Hero, who hugs him, takes him to the beach, and asks him what's wrong. He confesses to all he'd been hiding from her, and tells her about the dream world they're in; she tells him that she'd figured as much, since the logic of this world made no sense and she kept getting Dimensional Screams that gave visions of an empty void, nothing more. However, she can't quite remember the true world apart from some vague impressions. Partner can feel that she's real, but he doesn't have the heart to tell her that she's technically dead, so instead he tells her about a "nightmare" he had where they were separated, where she went to follow Grovyle and left him all alone. Hero, not knowing the true context but fully aware that he's alluding to some event from the real world, reassures him that she'd never leave him all alone -- not willingly, that is. He's too precious of a friend for her to ever consider abandoning like that.
After another hug, Hero suggests that they look for Cresselia -- not to kill her, but just to talk. After all, if the mastermind behind this world wanted her dead so badly, perhaps she alone has a way to stop him. This time, they find her easily. She explains that this dream at least partially revolves around the will of the dreamer, so maybe the dreamer hadn't wanted them to find her until now; after all, the dreamer had likely had their memories altered, just like everyone else, and Cresselia was listed as a dangerous outlaw thanks to Darkrai, her nightmarish counterpart and the true mastermind behind the dream. She notes that he can appear any way he wishes in dreams, so he could be anyone. She also says that a setup like this would have needed the spoken consent of the dreamer, through a Faustian bargain, but that Darkrai likely disguised himself and misled the bargainer as to how it would actually play out. Upon hearing this, Partner finally remembers the last missing piece -- his conversation with "Jirachi" -- and the floor falls out from under him.
Literally.
Somewhere deep in the caves below Bubble Dream, Partner calls out to Bidoof, looking to confirm one last thing. Bidoof is summoned by his call, and though he's very confused by everything, when Partner asks him about the encounter with Jirachi in Star Cave that he'd once told a story about, Bidoof is able to confirm that the real Jirachi is nothing like the one Partner saw.
"If that's true," Partner says with a broken smile, "then the one who trapped you all here was me."
The dream warps around them once again, worse than before, leaving Partner alone again, standing on a facsimile of Temporal Tower falling to ruin. Chimecho appears behind him; Partner greets "her" as Darkrai, and Darkrai nods. Darkrai mocks Partner, asking him why he isn't happy that his wish was granted. Partner attacks, but Darkrai teleports out of the way of every Leaf Blade and Dig. Partner slumps to the ground, crying that this wasn't what he'd wanted, not at all. Darkrai responds that there's no such thing as a free lunch -- in exchange for using his space-time distortion to bring Hero back, Partner's dream of a happy life was used to make a pocket dimension in a rift, a perfect trap that anyone can enter -- if they can find it in the first place -- but none can leave unless Partner wakes up, and thanks to the Dark Void move Darkrai constantly has him under, he never will. When Cresselia went to investigate all the vanished Pokemon and the telltale nightmare feeling, she was trapped, and Darkrai assumes the same is true of the other two "interlopers." Partner would have likely become his enemy as well, but instead, he became the trap, and since Hero is trapped as well, there's no way for her to be restored to the timeline -- if such a maneuver even exists. Darkrai is free to spread distortion and nightmares all over the outside world, and when Dialga and Palkia inevitably get involved, they'll wind up investigating the biggest distortion -- the pocket dimension -- and get trapped as well. Even that absurdly powerful Wigglytuff was trapped, though it took a lot of ground-up Sleep Seeds to get him to stop questioning everything and asking for Chatot, someone he shouldn't have even remembered.
"Now," says Darkrai, "it's about time you dealt with Cresselia, as you promised. Not only do you have allies here, but you have power that you'd never have in the real world. This is your world, after all. Now that you're aware of that, you can do and make anything you wish. You could practically be the god of this world, if you wanted. I really do think you deserve it, after everything you've gone through, done, and lost. You deserve a happy ending." Eyes narrowing, he continues, "But I know exactly what you're thinking. You don't want to kill Cresselia. You, for some reason, want to return to your sorry excuse for a real world, the one where your best and only friend never existed. But this world isn't going anywhere. You may be its god, but my power still supersedes yours, and I can make your life here -- and the life of your friend -- so incredibly horrible that this little breakdown-induced distortion will seem like paradise. Never forget that I have power over fear."
Partner refuses to kill Cresselia, using what control he has to try and fail to hide her and the others before Darkrai imprisons him in a room based on the Dark Future's execution chamber, where he's forced to watch an illusion of Hero disappear over and over and over again, no matter what he does.
However, hope's far from lost, because the two "interlopers" are far more capable than Darkrai assumed, and Dialga's not a fool. Dialga and Palkia immediately knew when Darkrai made the pocket dimension and connected to the vanished timeline, and so they hatched a plan of their own. Dialga widened the crack into the vanished timeline and contacted Celebi, who was able to slip Grovyle and Dusknoir in while Darkrai brought in Hero. Meanwhile, Palkia sent Cresselia in to counter Darkrai's influence as best she could, and to protect Grovyle and Dusknoir from having their memories changed (Hero had too much of Darkrai's attention to risk her memories being restored). Cresselia also used her dream powers to disguise Dusknoir as a shopkeeper and Grovyle as a guild apprentice, and the two of them used these positions to find the source of the dream and attempt to jog his memory. Now that Partner is fully aware, the charade is over, and the battle begins.
With help from Dialga, Palkia, and Celebi on the outside, the trapped Pokemon fight Darkrai and all the illusions he creates. The recovered Wigglytuff uses his super Hyper Voice to chip at the fog barrier, eventually connecting with Palkia's efforts on the other side and making a small tear. Chatot calls to him through the tear, followed by all the other Treasure Town residents and guildmates who weren't sucked into the dream. This gives the exhausted heroes new hope, and they fight ever-fiercer to widen the tear.
Meanwhile, Hero finds Partner in the execution room and breaks his ropes, then sets fire to the illusory her. They escape and move to join the fight, but then Partner panics, saying that if Hero goes through the tear, his nightmare will come true and she'll go away. Hero says she'd never allow that to happen, and that she'll defy fate itself so they can stay together. She still doesn't remember... Partner is motivated by this and they join hands, combining their powers with the power of everyone there, both inside and outside, and this lets him wrest control of his dream back from Darkrai. The tear opens even wider, wide enough for everyone to step through, and the nightmare begins dissolving around them.
Now, the ending of this AU story thingy depends on whether you'd like it to have a tone similar to the actual PMD games and what happened in Explorers, or a tone more like PMMM Rebellion's ending.
PMD Ending:
(This assumes that the so-called "vanished timeline" is more like what happened at the end of special episode 5, where the Pokemon of the bad future got to live in a restored world.)
Darkrai sees his plan falling apart and attempts to flee, only to be stopped by Palkia and dragged to the real world, where Dialga, Palkia, Chatot, the non-trapped apprentices, the police, and most of Treasure Town's population have converged. They proceed to kick his ass.
Everyone in the dream world leaves through the tear -- everyone except Partner, Grovyle, Dusknoir, and Hero. Celebi arrives to take the latter three back to their timeline, as they don't belong in this world. Hero, however, having remembered everything, refuses to be separated from her partner again, and Dialga appears and offers to bind her destiny to this timeline, at the cost of being unable to return to her home future. Hero agrees, and she and Partner bid Grovyle, Celebi, and even Dusknoir a tearful farewell as they leave to their future.
Partner and Hero exit through the tear holding hands, ready to wake up in the real world together.
Rebellion Ending:
(This ignores special episode 5, so the "vanished timeline" and all the Pokemon there truly did cease to exist.)
Darkrai tries to escape but fails, and is killed by Hero, Partner, and Grovyle's final blow. His corpse dissolves into dark energy, which Cresselia contains in a triangular prism, warning everyone not to touch it.
Hero, Partner, Grovyle, Dusknoir, and Cresselia make sure everyone else gets out safely. As the nightmare world continues to dissolve, Hero, Grovyle, and Dusknoir also begin vanishing into light. Darkrai's distortion let them exist once more, but only for a short while, and now that this pocket dimension is ceasing to exist, so must they.
Partner refuses to accept this.
He stuns Cresselia with a blow to the spine, then throws her through the tear, breaks her prism, and absorbs Darkrai's power, which transforms him into something that isn't quite wholly Treecko anymore. With his newfound power of distortion, he starts shrinking the tear and reforming the dream world. Just like Hero, he'll defy fate itself to stay with his best and only friend. He even drags the fading Celebi in for good measure before slamming the tear shut.
Hero, Grovyle, Dusknoir, and Celebi have all stopped fading, but they're not happy with this turn of events, as the continued existence of this distorted world could have dangerous consequences for the real one. When the latter three protest, Partner says nothing, just looks down and puts them to sleep. When they wake up, their memories will have changed to fit the new world Partner is making.
Hero doesn't protest as the others did; instead, she takes Partner's hands and begs him to stop, to turn back and undo everything and rejoin the real world. She'd sacrificed herself for the future; there was no way she'd let it be put in jeopardy again for the sake of her continued existence. Partner argues that she didn't feel that way before, back when she didn't remember her true past, and he even implies that Grovyle somehow manipulated her into accepting her own death. He adds, a little bitterly, that she has no idea what it was like for him after she disappeared, all alone in the world, to which she snaps that he wasn't alone -- he had the whole guild behind him, supporting him, and they were going to miss him terribly if he kept himself trapped in this dream. Partner just smiles and says that Hero matters far more to him than everyone else combined. She was always helping him, supporting him, building his confidence. He'd only gotten this far because of her, and now, it was his turn to be the savior. His gentle smile is all Hero can see as her world goes black.
Once upon a time, an amnesiac human-turned-Cyndaquil woke up on the beach and was found by the one who was always destined to be her very best friend.
(There we have it! Sorry for how sloppy and cliched this was; I rushed to get it all down and wound up writing so much more than I thought I would.)
Yāall asked for it, so Iām delivering! Here are a few of the shop owners in Treasure Town for TTAS!
The first one is Felicity the Greedent! Sheās a mom and keeps storage for explorers. Sheās very boisterous and has a hearty laugh. She loves joking around, but sheās very supportive!
The second one is Stash! Heās a Liepard/Gimmighoul fusion. He breaks open locked treasure chests at a modest price. He also sells keys that can be used in certain dungeons. Heās very sly and playful.
This art won 1st place in the Cover Art Contest for the Pokemon Workshop PMD Album Collab 2. I am hyped beyond belief for this win because this piece was up against a lot of strong entries, which I will try to find and reblog after I post this.
