I blame you. I read the first two Scholomance books in days, and just spent 3.5 hours devouring the Thief. I lost this afternoon and I Blame You.

also, i'm so excited you read Scholomance, those books fuck, and — you read the first two? meaning you've paused on book 2's cliffhanger? you're so strong. or suffering so much, depending

i love Golden Enclaves soooooo much, it's really the book that makes you go "OH that's what this trilogy is about." the realizations Naomi Novik sets you up for... it's so well done. the worldbuilding shaping the plot is so perfect

Scholomance is really one of those books where the world matters. it can't take place in some other fantasy or urban fantasy world, it's this one and I love that

Queen's Thief and Scholomance are such top tier series and I'm so excited for you

yea, I saw the movie first and it was one of my favorites. And then I read the book. And now I can't stop thinking "Where did Sophie go?" and "Why is there a war??" and "this scene doesn't go here and it fit so much better in the book". it's kinda terrible.

absolutely! some elements of the movie are nice on their own but I so much prefer the book’s story and versions of Howl and Sophie (howl is a melodramatic mess not a noble bird sorcerer! the aging is done so much better too!)

Maybe bc if the question "why is YA attractive outside the target demographic" is raised, it assumes that YA stories *shouldn't* be attractive?

idk if it’s that because many of the people raising these questions are YA readers and authors who are just interested in why the(ir) books appeal to such a wider audience than intended

Lars is not made for this terrifying life. Once they’ve gotten back the other way to the continent on flying circus rides she leaves him behind with Master Payne and the rest. It doesn’t matter that he still doesn’t remember her in more than flashes and impressions. She knows there is something deep inside him, something fascinated and helpless in her thrall that would absolutely die for her again.

"Many hands make light work" he'd said when you asked him about it. You'll take another one of his classes next year. All weirdness aside, at least he makes arthropods make /sense/.

for the guessing game, "Fun"

It was pretty helpful to think of it like a computer simulation. When sitting in one of those cockpit pods you knew the enemy was nonexistent and it was mostly about pixels and high scores and showing Dave and Dirk what was what. You still blasted all those little pixels to hell. It was actually a pretty fun game, even if you were safe and there was no mortal terror to tell you to fucking swat those debris away because the consequences would be a bit bigger than being expressionlessly jeered at.
