Kelton Sears & Ian McCutcheon of Kithkin, 2014
Seattle, Washington
I interviewed Ian and Kelton back in December 2014, which proved to be a really great interview with lots of great insight into their album and plenty of the emotional undercurrent that makes that album so great. But... we did the interview in the evening in December and when I normally like to find a location to do the shoot somewhere outside with natural light, I had to make do in darkness. I think that the photos I did get had plenty of personality to them but they weren’t exactly what I pictured in my head before hand. Sometimes however the final product has less to do with technical perfection or getting exactly the shot I wanted and instead it becomes about simply have A shot at all. By the following August Kithkin announced their final show at Chop Suey and by September the band was no more. I am so happy that I didn’t wait to schedule this interview and in the end for me having these pictures, while not perfect, I feel lucky to have them at all.
Ian McCutcheon of Kithkin, 2013
Bumbershoot, Seattle
It’s Bumbershoot this weekend, and though it seems to resemble the festival in name only these days I suppose this weekend I’ll post some past shots from the festival. Coming into Bumbershoot 2013 Kithkin had been named by a number of publicans one of the best bands to watch that year, they’d just released their EP Takers and Leavers, and I didn’t get it. I wanted to like their music but just... couldn’t figure out what was happening. Then I saw them on stage at Bumbershoot that year and it all clicked. They were amazing from that point on. There are few shots that could capture what Kithkin is like as a band or even what Ian McCutcheon is like as a drummer, he literally attacked the drums from all angles, he played them standing up- which he told me in a 2015 interview that he did so because it was more fun and not because it made him a better drummer. This shot captures Ian just a split second from smashing the hell out of that symbol.
