All the stereotypes I knew of have already been covered by other people, but I was curious how much trolls/folklore are part of art and media there? I went to Sweden once for a 2-week choir tour and a lot of tourist shops had trolls and things but I wonder if that's just a sales trap. Our tour guide was funny and said as we drove past big wrapped-up bales of hay that they were footballs for trolls.

It doesn’t really play any part in media directed to adults, at least that I’ve seen, but SO many of our fairy tales and such are folklore based and we grow up being told about changelings (AKA human children replaced with troll children) and other creatures from Nordic folklore.

As far as art goes, most of the art that features trolls and folklore isn’t new, but there is a lot of art featuring creatures from Nordic folklore.

One of my personal favourite artists is Jenny Nyström who’s famous for painting “gårdstomtar” (the best translation would probably be gnomes). In Nordic folklore they were creatures who lived on farms and as long as you treated them well they’d help look after the farm (but if you didn’t treat them well… boy, were you in trouble). Anyway these paintings have sort of become our base for Santa Claus over time and her paintings are very common motifs on Christmas cards.

Okay, I’m gonna stop now because if I don’t I’ll continue talking about Swedish art forever. To sum this up I’d say that yes, folklore is absolutely part of our culture and not just something to sell to tourists :)
