How to de-ice a frozen bike lock

This is the most recent bike problem I've had...and it was quite annoying. I left my bike outside for a few weeks, and it rained and snowed while it was outside. Next time I went to ride it, my lock was not working. 

I looked online forever. Some people suggested using a lighter to heat the lock. Others said to use de-icer. I used both of these--alot--and neither worked for me. I got scared.

The next step was to use a blowtorch, but I also looked into cutting it off, because I was pretty sure I was gonna have to do that. But luckily, the blowtorch worked!!! 

If it hadn't, it would have been really difficult to get the bike lock cut off. I called 311, and basically the cops will only cut a lock off if they think the bike's been abandoned. (Same as always, the cops are completely useless.)

I called a bunch of bike shops and no one had a grinder, the tool required to cut off a U-lock. So, yay for the security of U-locks, but be careful you don't get it stuck on your bike!

Ways to prevent my dilemma: be nice to your bike, and bring it indoors when you're not using it. Also, lubing up your bike locks will prevent rust and keep your lock in top form. Tri-Flow is a good lubricant. (thanks for the tip, Spanish!)
