[TW: Discussion of death, discussion of drug use, mention of suicide]
[The bomb drops. The shockwave follows. Scattered gasps. KATHLEEN grimaces and shrinks in on herself. MARGARET’s hand goes to her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes, and she reaches out for her.]
[MARGARET]: I… Kat, I’m sorry, I didn’t…
[KATHLEEN]: Don’t. Just--don’t bring it up, don’t talk about it, nothing, okay?
[MARGARET]: But…
[XAVIER]: Pills. She was taking them, too. If I had to guess, part of the reason she was fighting me was because the withdrawals were fucking her up. It was that, huh?
[He looks over at DAISY and gives her a smug grin.]
[XAVIER]: And all ‘cause you couldn’t suck it up and deal with the poison like the rest of us. No, you had to get high and deal with it like that.
[RYAN]: Don’t be mean, Xavier.
[MARGARET]: Wait--hold on. Ryan, you knew?
[...]
[RYAN]: I… um…
[MARGARET]: You knew and you didn’t tell me?!
[RYAN]: I didn’t think…
[MARGARET]: You didn’t think. Amazing. Guess that’s why you didn’t tell me my best friend was on methamphetamines.
[KATHLEEN]: Maggie, please…
[MARGARET turns to her with a stern, but caring, look in her eyes.]
[MARGARET]: We’ll discuss this later, Kathleen.
[Then, she turns back to RYAN and NADIA, and the fury comes right back up.]
[MARGARET]: Do you two have any idea how dangerous that was? They got stolen and you wouldn’t even let me help you look! Look at Xavier! I know damn well he’s the only person here you care about, Ryan!
[RYAN]: I don’t--
[MARGARET]: Don’t try to justify yourself!
[NADIA]: I can’t believe you’re defending Xavier, Maggie.
[MARGARET]: I’m not defending anything.
[NADIA]: Well, you seem to be pretty solidly on his side right now.
[MARGARET]: There’s no sides! There were never any sides! There’s only things I know and things I don’t know! There weren’t sides until you started making sides!
[NADIA turns to KENNY.]
[NADIA]: Why aren’t you stopping her?
[KENNY]: Because I deserve to know this too.
[NADIA]: This doesn’t have anything to do with the case!
[KENNY]: Yes, it does! I told you to give all the evidence you could. I don’t know if you know this, but everyone else is on her side right now.
[DAISY]: I’m not!
[MAIA]: Yeah, because what you’re on is crystal meth, Daisy!
[KATHLEEN]: My crystal meth!
[DAISY]: Kathleen, that’s not what this is about!
[MAIA]: Are you high right now!?
[DAISY]: Why would you say that?!
[KATHLEEN]: ‘Cause you’re acting like it!
[DAISY]: No, I’m not!
[ELLIE]: Crystals are cool. I like crystals.
[MAIA]: Not this kind, kiddo.
[ELLIE]: Aw. What’s wrong with them?
[DAISY]: Now’s not the time for this conversation, Maia!
[ELLIE]: But I wanna know!
[MAIA]: I’ll tell you later. It’s not worth it.
[DAISY]: Why does this even matter right now, Kenny?
[KENNY]: It matters because, as far as we know, you had the most motive to kill Tom.
[...]
[DAISY]: I mean… I’d argue the opposite. Everyone had a motive to kill Tom except me.
[...]
[KENNY]: What the fuck are you on about?
[DAISY]: I mean, if you think about it, we were all going to die before Tom did. And, obviously, may he rest in piece, his death won’t be in vain, but I had something to hide. Don’t you think it’d have been more advantageous for me to die then as opposed to live past it and risk having it revealed?
[...]
[EVAN]: Are we just going to brush past that, or…?
[DAISY]: I mean, it’s kind of my best alibi right now, so I’d hope not.
[RYAN]: We mean the part where you said you wanted to die, Daisy.
[DAISY]: Now’s not the time for that.
[RYAN]: Uh, I think it is the time for this.
[DAISY]: No. Now’s the time for solving what happened to Tom.
[RYAN]: [sighs] Daisy--
[FOX]: I mean, she has a bit of a point.
[KATHLEEN]: Dear god. Is this trial about to turn into an impromptu therapy session?
[FOX]: No. I mean the part where she said she’d have no advantage in killing Tom. This seemed planned. If Daisy’s right and she did want time to run out and for nobody to find out, why would she kill Tom? That buys her more time. It does the exact opposite of what she would want.
[JAIME]: Do you think it could just be a distraction?
[KENNY]: … What do you mean by that?
[JAIME]: I mean the killer knew that Daisy had the drugs and intentionally led us to believe it was her so she would get away.
[ELLIE]: What if Daisy was the accomplice?
[DAISY]: Wh--no! I wasn’t!
[KENNY sighs.]
[KENNY]: Look. Accomplice, whoever the fuck you are, any number of you if there’s more than one--we don’t give a shit, really. We won’t be mad. You can come forward. You won’t get hurt. We just need a name.
[...]
[KENNY]: Daisy, if it was you, we won’t be mad.
[DAISY]: But it wasn’t! I told you, it wasn’t me!
[KENNY]: Does anyone have actual evidence that can prove Daisy didn’t do this?
[...]
[KATHLEEN raises her hand. KENNY buries his head in his hands and lets out a sigh.]
[KENNY]: God fucking damn it, Kathleen. I told you to leave nothing out.
[KATHLEEN]: I didn’t know it was involved with the case until now!
[KENNY]: And this is why we say everything! We don’t know what we don’t know and we need to not talk in circles!
[KATHLEEN]: I’m not talking in circles!
[KENNY]: This is the exact definition of running in circles, Kathleen!
[KATHLEEN]: I’m trying to help you, Kenny! Accept it!
[KENNY]: You’re not helping anyone but the killer by leaving stuff out! And, news flash, if the killer wins, we all die!
[KATHLEEN]: Daisy came into the medbay right after Maggie did!
[...]
[KENNY]: Oh.
[KATHLEEN]: I don’t think she knew I was awake. She was apologizing to Xavier for something and she said it was her fault and she was a coward. She left before Maggie came back. When did she show up to the dining hall?
[RYAN]: … Around the same time as I did… which was before the bang.
[KATHLEEN]: So, thinking about it, would Daisy have the time to go from the Medbay all the way up to the classrooms, then back down to the dining hall before the bang happened?
[ELLIE]: What if Tom’s body was moved?
[KENNY]: I don’t think so. He was pretty solidly in the classroom.
[ELLIE]: Aw.
[...]
[Suddenly, horror crosses NADIA’s face. Something seems to dawn on her.]
[NADIA]: Oh, no.
[KENNY]: You okay there?
[NADIA]: I--I think I might’ve just figured it out.
[KENNY]: What is it?
[NADIA]: Xavier, the paper in Tom’s room… you said he had a notepad under his bed?
[XAVIER]: Under his pillow.
[NADIA]: Close enough.
[XAVIER]: Not really.
[NADIA]: Now’s not the time.
[KENNY]: I mean, it kind of is. Accuracy’s important, Nadia. I thought you’d know that. You’re a lawyer.
[JAIME]: I wouldn’t exactly say this is an accurate representation of a courtroom…
[KENNY]: You’re not helping.
[NADIA]: And neither are you. Maggie, you said you smelled lemon on the paper?
[MARGARET]: Yeah.
[NADIA]: And, Ryan, there was a burnt paper in the art studio?
[RYAN]: Yes, there was.
[NADIA]: And you found cotton swabs, too.
[RYAN]: Yeah? I don’t get it.
[NADIA]: Ryan, what exactly do you teach the kids at your school?
[RYAN]: Math.
[XAVIER]: Nerd.
[RYAN]: Oh, don’t be like that! Math’s cool! Plus, I teach English, too.
[NADIA]: Hm. Didn’t take you for much of a reader.
[RYAN]: I love reading! You can look at words on a page and just know stuff! It’s great!
[...]
[RYAN]: … don’t have to give you guys that spiel, do I?
[KATHLEEN]: If the reading bug hasn’t bitten us by now, time’s up.
[NADIA]: Do you ever even observe science experiments with them?
[RYAN]: Um… a few times.
[NADIA]: Do you remember one that uses those components? Lemon juice, cotton swabs, paper, and heat?
[RYAN]: Oh, there was one. I’m blanking on what it was, but…
[RYAN goes quiet and snaps his fingers a few times, scouring his memory for what the results could’ve possibly been.]
[RYAN]: It was something about… hm.
[NADIA]: Good lord, Ryan. Invisible ink.
[RYAN]: Wh--? How is that…? So you’re suggesting…?
[NADIA]: Yes. I think Tom was using invisible ink to communicate with people.
[RYAN]: How? Why?
[NADIA]: I don’t know. But the pieces line up awfully well, don’t they?
[KENNY]: I’ll admit, if it’s not true, it’s a pretty fuckin’ contrived coincidence.
[NADIA rolls her eyes.]
[NADIA]: Once again, professionalism. But that’s exactly what I’m saying right now.
[KENNY]: Okay! So, where did we find these notes?
[CHARLOTTE raises her hand.]
[CHARLOTTE]: Um… my room, apparently. I guess. I didn’t know that’s what they were or who was leaving them.
[EVAN shrugs]
[EVAN]: Classic Tom.
[NADIA]: Be respectful, Evan.
[EVAN]: I’m being respectful!
[NADIA]: Not really.
[EVAN]: Sorry.
[DAISY]: And the art room, too. Who spends the most time in the art room?
[CHARLOTTE]: I’d say Ellie and Fox spend a lot of time in there. Kathleen, too.
[KATHLEEN]: We know I’m innocent!
[CHARLOTTE]: I’m not accusing you of anything!
[KATHLEEN]: Oh, really? Then why are you so insistent that I’m in the art room a lot?
[CHARLOTTE]: I’m just covering all my bases. Plus, they’re in the kitchen, too.
[MARGARET]: Right… I’d say it’s me, Maia, and Ryan that spend the most time in there.
[KENNY]: But--Nadia, is there anything else? You seem really, really upset about something.
[NADIA]: Yes, well. If Tom was using secret notes to communicate, he obviously had something to hide from us.
[...]
[KENNY]: Nadia.
[...]
[KENNY]: Nadia, what are you--what are you saying right now?
[NADIA]: Yesterday, Tom came into my room and told me something. He said, roughly, that he “knew for a fact that we weren’t going to die.” I was worried at the time, of course, but I didn’t think… I thought he was…
[KENNY]: Goddammit, Nadia, tell us what you’re thinking.
[MARGARET]: I… I think I get it. Nadia, you don’t think…
[NADIA]: I don’t think the killer had an accomplice. I think…
[NADIA swallows the lump in her throat.]
[NADIA]: I think the killer was the accomplice.
[...]
[CHARLOTTE]: … Nadia, you’re not suggesting…
[NADIA nods.]
[NADIA]: An assisted suicide, yes. I wish I wasn’t, but that’s exactly what I’m suggesting happened.
[...]
[RYAN]: … G-god…
[JAIME]: So he sacrificed himself so we could live.
[XAVIER]: … Why?
[KENNY]: What the fuck do you mean, ‘why?’
[XAVIER shrugs]
[XAVIER]: I mean, why does he think we deserve to live? We’re shitty people. You guys already know I’m an asshole. Kathleen beat the shit out of me. Daisy’s taking stolen meth. You’re an asshole. Nadia’s also an asshole. Charlotte’s on the verge of attacking someone, like, basically all the time. Evan’s a cheater. Maia made her parents get divorced. I don’t know what’s up with Margaret but there’s no way she’s actually that nice. Ditto for Jaime. Ryan keeps secrets that can get people killed. Fox is completely batshit crazy and put us here, and Ellie’s just whiny.
[...]
[MARGARET]: There’s… quite a lot wrong with that statement.
[JAIME]: I’m nice…
[KATHLEEN]: I mean, he’s got a point. If anyone here deserved to live more than anyone else, it was him.
[FOX]: I don’t think any of us deserved to live including him.
[MAIA sighs.]
[MAIA]: You can’t say that, Fox.
[KATHLEEN]: Shut up, Fox. Nobody likes you.
[FOX]: Oh.
[MAIA]: You can’t say that, Kat.
[FOX]: See? Maia likes me.
[MAIA]: Anyway, that makes sense for how he was on the ladder in the first place. But how could he get it down? It’s not exactly easy to kick over a ladder.
[ELLIE starts crying.]
[MAIA]: Oh, El… what’s wrong?
[ELLIE]: I--I don’t know… [sobs] B--but… I--I’m sorry. I know you’re not supposed to lie in a trial, but I was just really scared, and…
[More tears. MAIA’s concern shifts into panic.]
[MAIA]: Ellie, what…?
[ELLIE]: I--I--
[She takes a deep breath and pulls herself together just long enough to say--]
[ELLIE]: I know where the other extension cord is…!
[ELLIE dissolves back into tears. Shakily, MAIA places a hand on her back.]
[DAISY]: Where is it?
[ELLIE]: In the incinerator. I--I put it there. While we were looking.
[ELLIE chokes on a sob.]
[ELLIE]: I didn’t know. I’m sorry. It’s where the metal bits came from.
[KENNY]: The prongs.
[ELLIE]: Y--yeah, but I 100% pinkie promise I didn’t kill Tommy, and I didn’t know why. I just saw it put outside the incinerator with a note saying to put it in later, so I did. I wanted to be helpful. I’m sorry.
[The group looks at each other. MAIA crouches down next to ELLIE.]
[KENNY]: … Okay. That’s definitely relevant.
[MAIA]: Thank you for telling us that. It must’ve felt good to get it off your chest, huh?
[ELLIE]: Y--yeah…
[MAIA]: Did you see whose handwriting the note was in?
[ELLIE]: No. I couldn’t tell.
[MAIA]: Was there anything else in the pile?
[ELLIE]: Um… more paper? And a piece of wood.
[MAIA]: A piece of wood? What’d the wood look like?
[ELLIE]: It was, um… long. And round. Like a cil--cylind--what’re they called? The tall circles?
[RYAN]: A cylinder?
[ELLIE]: Yeah! Those things!
[KATHLEEN]: Did you fail kindergarten or something?
[ELLIE]: I’m homeschooled ‘cause my daddy doesn’t let me go to school with other kids. He says it’s doctor-nation and my acting’s more important.
[MAIA]: … do you mean indoctrination?
[ELLIE]: That’s what I said!
[...]
[ELLIE]: Was that something bad? Are you mad at me?
[MAIA dries ELLIE’s tears.]
[MAIA]: No, Ellie. We’re not mad at you. Thank you for telling us.
[RYAN]: Ellie, do you--
[MAIA gives him a stern look and shakes her head.]
[MAIA]: Not right now, Ryan. We don’t need to upset her any more.
[Reluctantly, RYAN backs down.]
[MAIA]: Kenny, do you think Ellie might be talking about part of the ladder?
[KENNY]: That’d make sense, yeah. But how would the extension cord be related to that?
[NADIA]: Ellie, was the cord tied or altered somehow, or used in any way that wasn’t to charge or connect something?
[ELLIE]: Hmmmm…
[Her eyes light up. The realization dawns on her.]
[ELLIE]: Oh, yeah! It was like it’d been cut in half!
[NADIA]: Cut in half?
[ELLIE]: Mhm! And so was the ladder bit!
[ELLIE frowns.]
[ELLIE]: I thought that was weird but I didn’t wanna say anything ‘cause I didn’t wanna bother anybody.
[KENNY]: Hey, at least you told us.
[MAIA]: We promise you can bother us at any time. Okay, Ellie?
[KENNY]: Correction, she can bother you at any time.
[MAIA]: Kenny, you’re not helping.
[KENNY]: Can we get back to solving the actual murder?
[MAIA]: As soon as we get all this sorted. Ellie, if you see anything weird, just talk to one of us and we’ll get it sorted out. Okay? You don’t need to do everything yourself. You’re a kid.
[ELLIE]: But I’m not a kid. I’m seventeen and a quarter. You know that, right?
[MAIA]: I do. But you know what I mean. You’re vulnerable.
[ELLIE]: I’m not!
[ELLIE stomps her foot. MAIA shakes her head.]
[MAIA]: Okay, Ellie, we’ve gotta get back on track now. We can talk about this later.
[ELLIE]: Fine.
[MAIA]: There’s still one more big thing we need to find out before we have an actual roadmap of the case. Who saw the body before Kenny?
[NADIA]: Well, for that, we’d need to figure out who counts as the killer.
[The group looks at DAISY.]
[...]
[DAISY]: Seriously? You’re all just waiting for me to ask?
[JAIME]: Well, Monodoodle really only listens to you.
[DAISY sighs.]
[DAISY]: Fine but you owe me. Monodoodle? Question.
[MONODOODLE]: Yes?
[DAISY]: Who counts as the killer?
[MONODOODLE]: I can’t tell you that! That’s cheating.
[DAISY]: You know damn well that’s not what I meant.
[MONODOODLE]: I don’t! I don’t know anything.
[DAISY]: You’re a shit role model.
[MONODOODLE]: Don’t swear!
[DAISY]: Deal with it. In the case of a usual suicide, would the victim and the killer be one and the same?
[MONODOODLE]: Yes.
[DAISY]: So, does that mean you’d just… execute the corpse, or would there be a freebie…?
[MONODOODLE]: It’d be a freebie. Aren’t I so nice?
[DAISY]: I don’t… really see what the alternative would be.
[MONODOODLE]: Duh. Executing the corpse again.
[DAISY]: That’s not how any of this works, but I digress.
[MONODOODLE]: You’re mean.
[DAISY]: What I’m trying to get at is, this wasn’t a regular suicide, though, was it?
[MONODOODLE]: I can’t tell you that!
[DAISY]: If someone helped Tom kill himself, would that person be considered the killer?
[MONODOODLE]: Of course.
[...]
[DAISY]: So that means… there was probably more than one accomplice.
[XAVIER]: And you think that because…?
[DAISY]: Because someone found the corpse before Kenny did and hasn’t told us.
[KENNY]: And if they want to tell us, now’s the time.
[...]
[KENNY]: Seriously. We’re not asking for much. Just a name. We don’t give a shit. We’re just going to move on.
[...]
[Nobody takes the bait. Everyone simply looks between themselves, knowing that one--no, two of them--are lying.]
[...]
[NADIA sighs and shakes her head.]
[NADIA]: Okay, so we’re doing this.
