what if, and hear me out here, it didn't matter whether a transmisogynistic caricature was "intended" to depict a trans woman. what if we could acknowledge that symbols carry meanings beyond what a creator put in them, and that you cannot divorce them from the society that will read them? what if we recognized that a character exactly resembling the worst stereotypes about a group of people will cause harm to that group no matter whether the text refers to them as a member of that group? what if it didn't fucking matter whether buffalo bill is a "real transsexual" because real transsexuals routinely get accused of being buffalo bills anyways

and to clarify for people unfamiliar: the "not a real transsexual" line has several implications:

(a) buffalo bill was an labeled as an autogynephile (reflected also in the "would you fuck me? I'd fuck me" scene with the mirror), meaning he was seen as a predator who was sexually aroused at the thought of being a woman but lacked some innate quality of womanhood, and

(b) that this framing - which reflects a real typology developed by Ray Blanchard and used to pathologize transfemininity and deny treatment to transfems who did not conform to Blanchard's misogynistic and heteronormative expectations - is an accurate and useful way to discriminate between "real transsexuals" and violent serial predators.

regardless of authorial intent (and that's a generous giving olive branch of a clause), what's being conveyed is that transfemininity must be rigorously assessed, gatekept, and endlessly scrutinized because of the possibility that one of us might be the kind of predator who is so incompatible with decent society that she should be first rejected and then executed.
