#tri4real https://www.instagram.com/p/BpUbPOGF73Q/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1qivzqeox2nn9
A little doodle from earlier. Still trying to figure out the right look for this character. I think I'm almost there. I took some pics before it was done in case I didn't "stick the landing" with this drawing, but it turned out just fine. #artistsoninstagram #art #comic #characterdesign #drawingwhileblack #drawing #comicbookart #mohawk #ink #inkedgirls #character #ballpointpen #tristaff #mastakilla #36chambers #gordonliu
There is something humbling about working with a tristaff.
There is something alive, and humbling, and sacred. There is something in snapping your nails off, in smacking yourself in the back of the head, in knocking your jaw shut so hard you bite both sides of your tongue, in whipping it around so fast you knock yourself on your ass.
And people want me to teach them. Want me to somehow pass on this sacred thing, as if it is not uniquely individual and singular, as if it is something that is rote or normalized. As if it is something I can show, something I can explain.
There is something in the dance, that reminds me that I cannot control things, that reminds me that it is a partner, that it is as much as I am. How can I pass that to someone else? There is something in each painful smack, in each solid thud as it lands on my flesh, in each and every catch of breath when I hurt. How do I pass that on? How do I teach this thing that I can only understand in a language of pain and partners, that I only know in the bruises that will show themselves all over my arms in a few hours. How do I pass those bruises to someone else? How do I explain that they are marks of pride, that the pain means you're getting somewhere?
There is nothing to tell. There is no beat to pass together, no song to follow. No single step or pattern here. There is nothing to pass on.
I was handed a tristaff by someone I admired, and when I asked how to use it, they but shrugged.
