Triteleia laxa

This native California bulb is not uncommon in our part of California. providing a wonderful splash of blue in the spring. It has the common name of "Ithuriel's spear", and it looks great alongside the California poppies in the Ruth Bancroft Garden, as seen above. Triteleia and the related genus Brodiaea have been placed in different families over the years, moving from the Amaryllis Family to the Themidaceae and now to the Asparagaceae (in the subfamily Brodiaeoideae).

In this herbaceous border the late summer display was provided by the orange flowers of the tuberous rooted Alstroemeria sp. (Peruvian lily) and these contrasted with the blue blooms of the cormous perennial Triteleia laxa (brodiaea, grassnut, Ithuriel's spear, triplet lily).

Ithuriel’s Spear (Triteleia laxa), one of my all time favorite wildflowers. Used to be considered a Brodaeia but the genus has now been split into Brodaeia, Triteleia, and Dichelostemma. I wish I had something for size comparison because these guys were the largest I’ve personally seen. I hope to collect some seeds this summer
