I don't know if anybody's asked this question. But what are your favorite types of rocks and/or geological formations?

OKAY so, obviously its a basic bitch answer but i DO love columnal basalt, its such an incredible example of how the chemical structure of particular minerals can affect the structure on a macro level!!!

Plus I played the Myst series a lot as a kid, and Amateria in Exile features columnal basalt which gives it this fantastically otherworld feel

BUT since thats such a basic answer, I gotta also give a shoutout to TROVANTS which are actually a type of rock which GROW and MOVE!!! They look all bulbous and weird:

Now, scientists originally thought this was the result of concretion (which is basically the process concrete is made thru for anyone reading who doesnt know) BUT there isnt a central nucleus AND theyre basically the same minerals as the sandstones beneath them! Its thought that they are undergoing a similar process though, where rainfall quick-dissolves and redeposits the sediment that make them up. (really not calling it concretion is a matter of semantics but hey all science is built on semantics soooooo)

But since I'm talking about concretion and how it results in fascinating formations, I ALSO have to bring up the similarly bizarre concretion examples known as Gogottes

These weirdos are made through ACTUAL concretion and a number of other chemical and geological processes over millions of years, and are functionally just bizarre chunks of sandstone!

As for regular, common minerals, I am partial to my namesake Jade, specifically the Jadeite side of it (Theres really two entirely different mineral groups which we call Jade, because taxonomy is funny), because it has some gorgeous subtle coloration differences. I also gotta give a shoutout to serpentinite because its a very neat mineral which makes up a lot of my local area

Growing stones of Romania

Although this phenomenon is not exclusive from Romania, growing stones (or trovants as called in Romanian geology) have a strong presence in this country. Due to their peculiarity, these concretions have converted into a touristic attraction, but are also the reason of a strong debate among scientists.

These stones are not only able to grow, but they also move, as it was noted that they change their position. These formations are roughly 6.5 million years old and although at first they look just like any other stone, their inside is similar to sand and if they are broken, the cross section resembles a tree trunk because of the age rings. In terms of size, the trovants vary between just a few milimeters to a few meters.

Scientists have been studying these concretions for many years and they noted that trovants can only form in large deposits of highly porous sand with the presence of calcium carbonate. After strong rains, these concretions assimilate the minerals present in rain water, which starts a chemical reaction between those minerals and the different sand layers. As a result, the sand layers dilate from the center to its margins. The deposition rate of this phenomenon is of about 4 to 5 centimeters in 1000 years.

Regarding the stones’ movement, scientists are still unable to provide a clear explanation, but some folks took the opportunity to present their alternatives that include strange magnetism, weird energy vortexes in the area and even alien intervention (I guess aliens were bored). There are also some local traditions, as usual; in this case, trovants are put beside the graves of loved ones so that they can have a peaceful eternal rest.

Although there are many places to check out the trovants in Romania, the Valcea County has the most significant accumulation. In the small village of Costesti you can even visit the “Trovants Museum Natural Reserve”, a geosite that was created in 2004 to protect these strange but formidable formations.

The Curious Case of the Living Rocks Ok, so these rocks aren’t actually alive, but they do seem to be growing and multiplying. They are known as trovants and they can be found in the small Romanian village of Costesti. These trovants came into existence during some powerful seismic activity some 6 million years ago. Scientists have noted that these particular rocks can only be formed in large deposits of highly porous sand along with the presence of calcium carbonate. Trovants are comprised of a hard stone inner core, with a shell made of sand. After heavy rain, the trovants absorb the minerals from the rainwater which sets off a chemical reaction between the layers of sand and the minerals. During this process, the layers expand over the rock’s inner core, and new bulges appear on the surface, giving the rock an appearance of growing and multiplying. Trovants are usually smooth, edgeless rocks, and can range in size anywhere between a few millimeters to a few meters. But one feature in particular has scientists especially baffled: they have tree-like age rings that are visible when the stone is cut. While there isn’t much well-documented research on these rocks, they still provide a sense of mystery and awe to visitors and locals alike.
