Unusual Jumping Spiders

Most jumping spider content I see is focused around Phidippus, which is a shame because Salticidae (the family of jumping spiders) is one of the most diverse families of spiders. This is just going to be some photos of different species or genera of Salticidae I find interesting.

I found a broad-faced sac spider (Trachelas tranquillus) and she loved the strawberry and cricket i gave her so i got attached and adopted her lol.

I’ll go back to my IWTV content after this, but I just wanted everyone to know that my boy Otis molted for the first time in my care and he’s now an i7!

This honestly explains why I couldn’t get him to eat for the past two weeks that I’ve had him because he was moving around like normal and then I found him like this when I came home from work last night!

Question for the Spider side of Tumblr & Wikipedia / iNaturalist users!

So, I was trying to identify the spider used as a referance for this piece of art:

At first, I thought it was a Long Spiny kite orb weaver (Gasteracantha falcicornis), now I'm 90% sure it was a ( Gasteracantha curvispina ). G.curvispina has no wikipedia entry, which is how I found G.Falciornis. However, iNaturalist has tonnes of G.curvispina photos, as well as a template for making a Wikipedia article. I am neither an Arachnologist, a resident of the African continent, nor a super-super nerd on either subjects of them ( though I do like to research both). It isn't, like, rude to create a new species page on Wikipedia when I'm just some guy, right? As long as I link sources. That's why iNat has that template, right? Also, G. curvispina has no common name in english despite being in several casual english web articles. How do I gaslight the public into calling it the Deviled Egg orbweaver Spider?

Button has been a mature male for a month now and it feels like a dreaded countdown. He has no interest in food, just making those webs and finding a female. I’ll be sad when he passes - I was so hoping they’d be a female and I’d have them with me for longer🥺

When I was keeping spiders a few years ago I offered my rabid a crumb of cucumber just to see what would happen, honestly didn’t expect her to take a sip from it considering she had access to fresh water 24/7 haha

well now i have to ask: what kind of silk stickers do spiders accessorize with?

Mostly they like star, spiral and zigzag shapes, like you'd find in a web! Some also wear things that drape over their legs. Most can't see well enough to appreciate them themselves, so they'll have jumping spiders look the accessories over for them. The jumping spiders will also dye the silk colors the web-spinners can't see, since jumpers have receptors for red, blue, green, and ultraviolet.

The web-spinning true spiders like to do this because they feel incomplete and exposed when they have to leave their webs (which function not only as a home, but also a big ear for them). This lets them feel like they've brought a little of it with them.

The spiders are very proud of anything they can do with their silk, and are always trying to make the stickers and draperies catch on with insects (and in fact, since most can't see the stickers themselves, it's also largely an attempt to impress the insects). Sadly, that has yet to happen.
