Art Post for "Dance Till I'm Dead" by starryn1ghtsky!

Black Swan is one of my favorite movies, so as soon as I saw this fic in the claims gallery, I knew I wanted to try to claim it. I'm so very lucky I did, and @starry-n1ght-skyyy's fic does not disappoint! It captures the self-consciousness, slow dread, and descent into hallucinatory terror that Nina in Black Swan experiences, while making it fit for Dean's character, and also makes use of the large NYC apartment space and other roles in the company shown on screen to carve out a vital role for Cas. For one of the main art pieces, I wanted to do the iconic scene that starryn1ghtsky adapts, where Dean in Nina's role steps out of the ballet company bathroom stall to find the damning word, 'Whore', written on the mirror. I talk more about the scene's meaning and the way it's been meme-d in my Ao3 art post. Here, starryn1ghtsky sent me a reference swatch for the exact lipstick (a softer, less transgressive nude color compared to the bold red in the movie) so I could use it in the scene, and to make it pop more, I used a color on the opposite side of the wheel for the bathroom tiles.

I played around with the timing, but anything faster than 0.5s per frame hurt my eyes so I figured it wouldn't be pleasant to others.

For the second main art piece, I chose to illustrate one of Dean's hallucinations: a scene from chapter four where Dean hallucinates an eldritch true-form angel bursting out of his concerned neighbor Cas:

Similar to how I did Dean in the bottle of Angel's Envy for Maxine's fic Forget Me Not, I painted each element on its own layer, exported the picture to Canva after toggling each one on, then set the time for each frame and exported it as a GIF.

I also did a reverse incident of the banner: where in Maxine's fic I did the main art first and then combined them to make the final banner, here, I'd done the banner for promos, then removed the text (same font as was used in Black Swan's end credits!) and logo, and added Dean's tutu so that it could be used as an additional main art piece.

And for fun I made these black and white swan feather dividers. I painted the white ones first, then duplicated and inverted it to get the black ones, and fixed it on an off-white background so it would show up on Ao3's default site skin.

When Dean and Cas got married, Dean was given a very small piece of Cas’ grace. In turn, he’s now able to see Cas’ wings when he unfurls them.

Some mornings Cas gets up before Dean wakes to stretch his wings in the early light. It takes Deans breath away every time he sees it, pretending to sleep so he can watch Cas be so at ease and peaceful.

I was on the edge of falling asleep when I got shot by a vision and ofc I thought "who could i share this with" and though of u. Sorry in advance for rambling.

Do we think cas' true form is like ruined? A lil bit? All those cosmic battles and Naomi's lobotomies and fights cas had no business walking away from but he did, and all those deaths he shouldnt have come back from but he DID. ((I am ignoring 15x20 the way i ignore st5 and got8.)) (Anyway. Read a fic that described his biblically accurate trueform and how many of cas' eyes were closed due to lobotomies, and the rings being bent and turning oddly and i was like. Yaaassss. Anyway). Like. An animal in the wild with so many healed broken bones and scar marks and all the other animals just stay out of its path kinda deal you kno? The rest of the angelic host is already crushing hard on cas, but like, I think none of them feel. At Ease. Around him. Celebrity crush typa thing.

But. Our sweet menace nephilim Jackie boy. (Truly fantastic casting choice considering the physical similarities to Mish, but I digress). I always headcanon that, along with his mom, he chose to look more like cas than his bio dad. He can do anything so why not unconsciously pick to look like his dad over the literal devil? In that vein. Did he model his trueform after cas too? Bent rings if he has any, halo crooked, wings with odd joints. Eyes that are closed until he opens them all when threatened. Things assume he's easy pray but nah. Kid just dresses like his dad<3

Re: Cas's true form being ruined - Yesssss, and I love all the chronic_pain!natural and disabled!hunters takes sooooo much, too. (I know I've seen some good ones on Tumblr.) I think Cas having chronic pain because of all that he's been through, even BEFORE the start of the series with the lobotomies, is so SOOOo delicious, because pain is distracting. It brings your performance down, even before you can articulate why, and you get so frustrated, and you wonder WHERE your potential dwindled away to, which fits Cas's whole arc SO well...

No, that's not his name. (bewildered smile) My father is Castiel."

And he canonically, in his mother's final, frightened moments, make the decision to draw on her fear and NOT be a baby. That's a lot of frightened-yet-chosen behavior, even if it's on an animalistic, instinctive level.

I love the idea of him mimicking Cas behaviorally, though, like how a puppy limps because its dad limps, that sort of thing. So, the closed eyes and holding himself a certain way would be so cute from this angle alone!

I'm literally in the middle of the new chapter and I had to come here and ask: What do *you* think Cas's trueform looks like? I have a hard time gelling "wavelength of celestial intent" with the "biblically accurate angels" idea. How can a wavelength have wings? Eyes? Spinning rings of fire? How can a terrifying being of godly might the size of the Chrysler building be insubstantial as a sound, as pure light?

So I have a couple thoughts about Cas’ trueform.

My hc is always a mix of religious imagery, folklore and fantasy.

I see his form as malleable, in heaven it’s pure light, his wings are fragments of color. But the closer he comes to earth and because he’s a warrior his form can take a more corporeal state so a more dragon or griffin like creature with multiple heads a lion, ram and another with human like face for his humanity. (Almost like a blank mask with expressive big blue eyes.)

Multiple limbs and claws. Great black inky wings with a blue iridescent color to them. Floating eyes that look like rings with how they’re arranged. His grace surrounding them that would give the illusion of fire.

I think he’s covered in soft feathers like a bird that are warm but can become hard as steel for armor but also fur. In my mind his body isn’t delicate like the other angels, being a warrior I feel like he was created be withstand battle so he’s thick and muscular but is still able to manipulate his form. Kinda leaning into the lore that human minds can’t comprehend kinda thing.

I think he looks incredibly scary while still being beautiful but Dean would just see Cas. I tend to lean into the very otherness of Cas that he is still a creature, a divine one but still a creature.

I like the idea that he’s huge but can control his form because he’s a soldier, a feature Chuck thought would be useful.

I hope this paints a better picture 🤣 I go back and forth on what he looks like in my fics but I can’t draw so I can only cobble together a couple words that describe a creature that can look both menacing and bitchy 🥹🥹🤣🤣
