I think Iron Lung deserves to be Oscar nominated for the makeup and I'm completely serious. Tiny splashes of blood he didn't know to clean off because he doesn't have a mirror slowly turn into burns and then holes in Simon's head and you don't notice at all until it's too late. You think, oh, that must have been a burn all along, I guess, that's why it was still there. The bandages get bloodied, and then bloodier from the inside. Keeping makeup like that consistent at all is already a nightmare and they made it an arching plot point. The only makeup job I didn't care for was at the very, very end, and it's for the usual "building on top of because you can't take away from the surface" reasons, it's completely fine from this size production.

The Apothecary Diaries is such a breath of fresh air because this is a story that genuinely seems to love women. From the sex workers of the Verdigris House to the seemingly antagonistic women of the palace (like Suirei and Loulan), the Apothecary Diaries declares that every single one of them deserves grace and dignity even if (or especially if) they come into conflict with its protagonist or societal respectability

#of course this framing is only possible because maomao was raised in a heavily marginalized environment #and is thus capable of recognizing the ways in which society shapes individual actions #making her incredibly empathetic towards the vast majority of the women she comes across #obviously there are exceptions. lady lishu’s attendants are mostly all 2d caricatures of early 2000s mean girls #but as a whole the narrative truly values women in a way that I’ve rarely seen #the apothecary diaries

i don't care if i sound like a complainer or im beating a dead horse, but all the promotion that tvl is getting—the magazines and episode-breakdown couch convo/podcasts and in-universe commercials and live concerts and tons of alternate previews and fucking fashion designer collaborations—compared to the next to nothing that the previous two black and brown-led seasons got really feels purposeful. like amc got their audience built off of their diverse cast, and now they're shifting to a whiter brand, perhaps what they'd wanted to do all along, and are doing their best to advertise that as much as possible.
