16 years ago today, everybody’s favourite Tiva episode of the mothership aired, and we were never the same.
Ok so let me just get this out. Ziva was raised to be the sharp end of the spear. The warrior. The soldier. The muscle. She was raised to be a weapon, and sacrifice if necessary for any number of her father’s causes. She was not allowed to question. She was expected to follow orders and die if necessary. Ziva was taught that she was expendable. She was never allowed to just be a little girl.
Truth or Consequences was Ziva David’s first encounter with someone, anyone going out of their way to rescue, save, and find her. This concept was foreign to Ziva. She was in the middle of sacrificing herself for her father, to “prove herself,” when she heard those words.
You know the words.
She had never seen herself as worth more than the mission. Tony turned her world upside down with this one. She was so broken. Her eyes, the darkness. Post Somalia Tony was different, just as Post Somalia Ziva was different. The shift. And I say all of that to say this…
Spin-off Tony is a father. An older, wisened father, and he has context now to look back and tell Ziva that Fuck Mossad. Dads don’t send their daughters to die and be raped and tortured for a cause. Spin-off Tony will be a protector. When Tali’s life is in danger, there is no obstacle that will keep him from protecting his baby, and his…safe house roomie.
