After much travel and an especially long day, the Westcotts arrive at their new home on the farmland they’ll be leasing. Sky checks the place out thoroughly to make sure it’s safe for her family.
Ma sees her new home for the first time. Their old house was a wooden, 2-room shack. This house has 3 rooms plus 2 more alcove “rooms” and is made of stone, which will be much warmer in the winter and much cooler in the summer. It’s absolute luxury as far as she’s concerned!
Teenager, Rachel, happily plays with the dog, while her brother, Jedediah, checks out the rest of the house. She’s tired but happy that she doesn’t have to sit in the wagon for another day.
“I can’t believe we live here now,” she says.
Jedidiah puts food out for the dog while Ma tends to baby Abner. Sky wants to be where all the activity is, so she’s right underfoot.
Pa brings in all the blankets and puts Sky’s blanket next to the woodburning stove. Sky looks happy with her new spot.
Ma and Rachel quickly make up the beds, and Jedediah, exhausted, climbs into his as soon as it’s made. He falls fast asleep the moment his head touches the pillow.
It’s time for Abner to go to bed, too, so Ma bundles him up. He’s in a grumpy mood because he’s so tired, but he quickly stops fussing and goes to sleep.
“How do you like your new home, girl?” Pa asks Sky. She wags her tail.
Ma is a tall, sturdily-built woman...just the way Pa likes ‘em.
All the kids are in bed, and Ma and Pa have just enough energy to try and make a new kid. After all, they’ll need as big of a family as possible in order to work this big farm.
Sky sees the covers moving and assumes there’s some sort of creature under there trying to hurt Ma and Pa. She barks, and the movement stops. Ah, scared it away. Sky proudly leaves the room, having saved her family once again.
