For a while now I’ve been thinking of revisiting These Tides Do Turn to clean up the writing, and with the premiere of the live action ATLA series rapidly approaching, it feels like a good time to do just that. (Also @silcoitus gave me a helpful push so thnx bby 💋)
So, this is a heads-up that I will shortly be reworking this fic in a significant way, and anyone who would like to retain a copy of the original version should download a PDF from AO3 now.
I want to make clear that the integrity of the story will remain intact. The plot will not change, neither will the overall structure, nor the majority of the dialogue.
My aim is to tighten the prose, catch any errors I missed the first time around, and in general make sure everything reads nicely and is written to a standard that I am happy with. This will include refining some characterisations and dialogues (particularly Zuko’s), but not to an extent that it affects the original story.
Essentially what I am doing is a huge, in-depth editing pass to create a definitive edition. In the two years since first posting TTDT I have grown a lot as a writer, and I want to make sure that Tides reflects this as it’s such an important story to me.
So again - the core story will remain unchanged, but if you were to compare the original prose side by side with the updated prose, you should notice a marked difference between the two.
AO3 doesn’t send notifications for fic edits, so I will be posting announcements here on tumblr once each chapter has been reworked and uploaded.
Whilst I’m in the process of doing all this, I will be removing the text from all future chapters to keep people from accidentally reading ahead into the unedited bits.
I’m already currently editing Chapter 3, and will be updating Chapter 1 very soon (I’m thinking Wednesday)
I hope this is exciting news for any old fans of TTDT, and perhaps people who might be discovering it for the first time. And I hope that anyone who does reread Tides will find that it’s the same story they know and love, only better❤️💙

I legitimately think that this is one of the greatest fics I've ever read and I'm really glad it exists! I love the way you handle the characters, you've really done such an amazing job staying true to the core principles that the characters have and captured the spirit of ATLA which is something not a lot of people are able to do.
I'm genuinely sad it's coming to an end soon, but I wanted to know if you're gonna expand this universe? Like a sequel or a spin-off or even just one-shots?

The answer to your question is yes! Once the main story is wrapped up, I will be writing and posting a few bonus chapters. (These will literally be tagged on the end of the main story, with [bonus] in the chapter title name). I have three plotted currently - two of which will be post-story one shots, and one of which will be a rewind back into the main story to look at a particular moment through a different POV 👀
I probably won’t be doing a sequel - purely because after all Katara and Zuko have been through in this story, I want to leave them content in their happy ending. To do a full length sequel worth reading, rules of storytelling would force me to include new conflict and I just don’t have the heart 😭

I'm seriously so happy for Harry.He's open and more confident and just genuinely happy. I Gotta say it but We're slowly seeing xfactor 2011 harry come back. He's being alot more bubbly and Happy in interviews again not just being quiet anymore I'm so proud I could cry. 💕

I’m such a mood writer though - so the stars kinda have to align for me to actually churn something out these days. Who knows - maybe the live action will inspire me. Probably more likely that it’ll piss me off, but you never know.
I’ve been considering rewriting These Tides Do Turn just to bring the prose up to scratch. I’ve grown a lot as a writer the last two years or so, and I’d love to elevate that story to the level where I feel I’m at now.
