Just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your posts about Chris and ableism and cerebral palsy. I’m new to the fandom and know nothing about cerebral palsy and it’s really great to be able to sort of check with someone’s reactions who knows it from the inside. There are things I caught on my own and said “hm” about but definitely things you’ve mentioned that went over my head. And it helps add depth to the characters to have that perspective too!

First of all, welcome to the fandom (what a time to find us, huh? 😅) and thank you for taking the time to read those specific posts because they definitely get buried in an environment that wants to promote "escapism". Not everyone takes kindly to discussions about the way the writing tackles cerebral palsy and ableism as it relates to *that* disability (I try my best not to overstep and apply my experiences to other disabilities I don't fully understand), but it's messages like yours and the small group of friends willing to listen that keep me going. If even one person is starting to question what they thought they knew because of something I've said? That's one person who can then pass that knowledge onto someone else. <3

do you like La Promesa and would you, generally speaking, recommend it? I am on the hunt for shows initially written and acted Spanish, but the recs I’ve gotten so far are mostly crime shows, which I don’t tend to enjoy much

Ohh this is a hard question. Because yes, I like it very much. And yes, I do recommend it, but... There are some problems that may very well be a turn off.

So since you like Downton Abbey, I'd say genre-wise you'll probably enjoy La Promesa. I think it's genuinely a very good period drama, the characters are compelling and there are sooo many evil scheming women (always a plus). To draw a comparison to Downton Abbey, I think it's better at class commentary than Downton is, even though it's sometimes a bit heavy-handed. There are some really effective and chilling scenes between The Family and their servants and the relationships between characters are very compelling.

I think the biggest problem with the show is the way it's paced. It's a daily drama, so they're probably trying to make the show understandable even if you miss an episode or two. But that means it's soooo slow paced. Like, to compare with DA again, you know how Bates is in two episodes and he's suddenly like "I've worked here for two years"? Well, in La Promesa you watch 50 episodes and find out a week has passed, maybe two. And they hammer the story beats in multiple times. My favourite example is this one character Simona being ill and thinking this other character Lope is her son. First we see it happen. Then Lope has a flashback of it happening. Then he tells one person that Simona thought he was her son. Then he tells it to another character. Then he goes to Simona and is like "you had fever, you thought I was your son". Then he tells another character... You get the gist. So like, I think this is a show where it's very okay to flash forward every now and then. And you know, every now and then something huge happens and the story takes several jumps ahead.

Another thing that may be a turn off is its premise which is kind of unusual in this genre, I think. A young girl sees her mother murdered and once she grows up she goes to work as a maid in a big house where she vows to avenge her mother and find her lost baby brother. But you know, it is very entertaining and we need more vengeful women as protagonists.

So yes, I do recommend it very much, but I think you have to try it to find out whether the pacing or the tone feel insufferable.

Hm I know you said KabruLaios doesn’t work for you but what if neither of them are actually into it. Kabru is seducing him in a flailing attempt to keep his enemies closer and Laios is uncertainly going along with it because he’s been pressured to give romance a shot. Is that anything?

The ship is growing on me, actually! I'm reading the manga and seeing more of Kabru's thought process about Laois has made me go [eyebrow raise]

And that idea sounds fantastic as a premise :D

as someone who fuckin. LOVES Q. like hes my tukok. Voyager's depiction of Q was only interesting in Death Widh becuase it expanded on the Q continuum in a meaningful way because fuck, yeah, who WOULDNT want to kill themselves if the were opnipitent AND they didn't wuss out and actually let the guy die, but after that yeah it definetly reads like they were trying to beat the Old Man Fucker allegations. I think the Q War was a super cool concept in theory but FUCK they fumbled so hard by adding the whole Q baby thing into it. like im all for Q lore but why did it need to come up in this way?? also something something they could have made the situation not about the q going extinct (because imo Death Wish was more about the horrors of opnipitonce or whatever the fuck and would have made Q (the guy) wary of adding to the mixing bowl) but instead literally just made it an extention of the war to have a choice and not have to behave by the hivemind or better yet just not have him come back!! Death Wish was a good ep and it should have ended there anyway sorry for ranting in ur inbox but Q is like. my White Whale and I take the content i have seriously (i refuse to watch picard for numerous reasons and therefore have to stick with my og content)

They’ve been writing really cool comments on my posts, which makes me happy, and I show love by writing things pretty. So I translated zir Tumblr name into Classical Maya.

The first phrase is a transliteration. That means I copied the sounds as closely as possible.

ʔɑjix tuustɑy is po tɑnsin

Glyphs: ʔAJ-ʔIX tu-sɑ tɑ-yi-si-po tɑ-nɑ-si-ni

The second phrase is a translation. I matched the meaning of Tuesday’s name as well as I could to Classical Maya words:

Sir-Lady 3rd Day for Dancing

The Maya didn't have a 7 day week, so this is actually the third day of a 260 day cycle that uses 13 numbers and 20 names. More literal translation:

sir/one.who-lady 3-darkness for/of dance

Pronunciation: ʔɑjix ʔux ʔɑhk'ɑɓ ti ʔɑhk'ot

Glyphs: ʔAJ-ʔIX 3-ʔAK'AB ti-ʔAK'-tɑ

(Note: I do not know why 'ʔahk'ot' has an 'o' but is spelled with an 'ɑ'. Sometimes this language is a mystery.)

Just for fun I also included the version I made 5 years ago. There have be improvements.

(This reads 'ti ɑhk'tɑj ʔɑhk'aɓ' with the glyphs 'ti-ʔAK'-TAJ-ja ʔAK'AB', but the 'ʔAK'AB' glyph is half way between the normal one for 'darkness' and the special day name version. I got the fat border, but forgot the legs. Also, this version translates as 'for to dance darkness', which I think is wrong. The modern version may STILL be wrong, but I think it's closer.)
