the positive lexicography project has described the below listed words the untranslatable words of the portuguese language (the list is still in progress though), and i’m laughing at how integral to our culture/way of being some of these concepts are:

Cafuné (n.): the act/gesture of tenderly running one’s fingers through a loved one’s hair. 

Colo (n.): area of body formed by chest and arms (used to refer to embracing/cradling). [very translatable as lap in most occasions tbh]

Desbundar (v.): shedding one’s inhibitions in having fun. 

Desenrascanço: to artfully disentangle oneself from a troublesome situation. [the portuguese way of life my friends]

Despejo (n.): pertness and boldness (usually in a pejorative sense); discomposure and lack of reserve/inhibition. [i’ve barely ever come across this word, regionally we’d definitely use others]

Ficar (v.): to be; one of three verbs for being in Portuguese, used to denote a completed condition and a precise place and time. 

Jeito/Jeitinho (Brazilian, n.): hack, solution; to find a way by any means (often circumventing rules or social conventions). [not just brazillian at all]

Saudade (n.): melancholic longing, nostalgia, dreaming wistfulness.

Saudosismo (Portuguese, n.): a movement that promulgated saudade as a national spiritual value that could have transformative power. 

Saudosista (Portuguese, n.): someone given to nostalgia; a follower of Saudosismo.
