Higos picos, chumbos o tunos... El cultivo de la tunera en Canarias se introdujo desde América y data del siglo XIX. Ha estado ligado al uso de sus palas, que alojan la cochinilla, un insecto del que se extrae un colorante de gran valor comercial... Además, sus frutos forman parte de la gastronomia tradicional canaria... De ella también se usa la flor para elaborar tisanas y hasta sus semillas, de las que se obtiene aceites usados en cosmética...

La Belleza Resiliente de Canarias: Mi Acuarela de Tunera con Frutos

¡Hola a todos los amantes del arte y la naturaleza!

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una pieza muy especial que me transporta directamente a los paisajes volcánicos y soleados de las Islas Canarias. Se trata de una acuarela que hice inspirándome en una tunera, también conocida como chumbera o nopal, con sus característicos y jugosos frutos, las tuneras o higos picos.

Este dibujo en particular cobró vida en Tenerife, una isla que me cautiva con su flora única y su luz inconfundible. Caminar por sus senderos y ver estas plantas robustas, llenas de vida y color, es una verdadera inspiración. Quise capturar no solo su forma peculiar, sino también la explosión de colores que ofrecen sus palas y, sobre todo, sus deliciosos frutos, que son un verdadero manjar local.

Un Homenaje a la Flora Canaria

La tunera es mucho más que un cactus; es un símbolo de la resiliencia y la adaptación a un entorno a menudo desafiante. Sus palas suculentas, que pueden variar en tonalidades verdes, amarillas e incluso púrpuras, junto con los vibrantes frutos que van del fucsia al naranja intenso, ofrecen una paleta de colores fascinante para cualquier artista.

Para esta acuarela, me centré en la fluidez del agua para dar vida a las texturas y los matices de la planta, dejando que los colores se mezclaran y crearan esas transiciones suaves que tanto me gustan en la acuarela. El fondo sutil en tonos azules y las salpicaduras de color buscan evocar el cielo canario y la alegría de la flora insular.

The Resilient Beauty of the Canaries: My Prickly Pear Watercolor

Today I want to share with you a very special piece that transports me directly to the sunny, volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands. It's a watercolor I made inspired by a prickly pear cactus (also known as chumbera or nopal), with its characteristic and juicy fruits, the prickly pears (tunas or higos picos).

This particular drawing came to life in Tenerife, an island that captivates me with its unique flora and unmistakable light. Walking its paths and seeing these robust plants, full of life and color, is a true inspiration. I wanted to capture not only their peculiar shape but also the explosion of colors offered by their pads and, above all, their delicious fruits, which are a true local delicacy.

A Tribute to the Canarian Flora

The prickly pear is much more than a cactus; it is a symbol of resilience and adaptation to an often challenging environment. Its succulent pads, which can vary in shades of green, yellow, and even purple, along with the vibrant fruits ranging from fuchsia to intense orange, offer a fascinating palette of colors for any artist.

For this watercolor, I focused on the fluidity of the water to bring life to the textures and nuances of the plant, letting the colors blend and create those soft transitions that I love so much in watercolor. The subtle background in blue tones and the color splatters seek to evoke the Canarian sky and the joy of the island flora.
