       she is the last person he would have ever expected to put him on the ground  ---  yet here he is, the back of his hand resting against the now burning skin of his chin, legs crossed as he sits where he landed in the dirt. while yes, he wanted to learn her technique  ---  as much as she fervently refused to teach it to him  ---  he never once saw her fist coming for his face, even as he had her cornered against one of the pillars of the training grounds. he had expected to find himself disarmed of his training blade...not for her to uppercut him out of the blue. he can already gauge with how sore his chin is that it’ll likely swell a bit  ---  goddess above, she’s strong than she looks  ---  not that it was a huge issue.

       and here she is, panicking and apologizing  ---  fretting over him  ---  even though she was the one that struck him. he sighs, eyes slowly shifting their gaze away from her face, instead choosing to bore into the ground with enough ferocity that it could probably burst into flames if he focused on it hard enough.  ❝  i’m fine.  ❞  he’s been in far worse pain before, so something as small as this pales in comparison. pushing himself back onto his feet, he rolls his eyes  ---  still refusing to meet her gaze  ---  as he readjusts his grip on the training sword in his hand.

                          ❝  that’s two techniques that you owe me, now.  ❞

       HE ISN’T ONE FOR CELEBRATIONS, NOT EVEN ONES  of the most basic level such as birthdays. Hell, he doesn’t even waste his breath on his own anymore. He hasn’t for years now. However, much as he’ll never admit to it, he knows how hearing those simple words can bring a hint of joy to someone’s face. While he could care less about such trivialities over all...there’s an unusual need compelling him to give her his best wishes, regardless. He has nothing to offer her in the form of a gift,  (  he’s terrible at picking them out, in all honesty  ------  )  though that’s likely for the better, but “it’s the thought that counts” is typically what one would take away from even that much from him, right?

        ❝  Hey.  ❞  OKAY, SO MAYBE HE DIDN’T COME COMPLETELY EMPTY HANDED,  if the small container housing a piece of cake in his hands was evidence enough that he’d thought of her. He’d seen her eat sweets plenty of times before whenever she’d taken off elsewhere from the dining hall with them to enjoy them in her usual solitude, so...surely she’d enjoy this one, too  ---  not that he personally cares whether she does or not.  ❝  ...I doubt you really want to hear this from anyone today knowing you, but...  ❞  He sighs, shoving the sugary confection in her direction.
