The bass thumped in my chest, each beat a frantic drum against my ribs. Klaus and I were neck and neck in beer pong, the red solo cups lined up on the antique table in the Lockwood mansion. Honestly, I was kind of impressed that he didn't just use his vampire speed to cheat. He was actually having fun. A real, human-like fun.
"You're going down, love," Klaus taunted, a smirk playing on his lips. It was moments like these, when the weight of his past and his monstrous nature seemed to fade, that I truly found myself falling for him.
"Don't get cocky," I retorted, grabbing a ping pong ball. I aimed, fired, and missed spectacularly. The ball bounced harmlessly off the table. Klaus roared with laughter.
Suddenly, one of Klaus's hybrids, Tony, appeared, his face etched with a worried frown. "Klaus, your… your father is outside. He's waiting for you."
The air in the room seemed to thicken. All the carefree joy that was there just moments ago evaporated in an instant. Klaus's eyes hardened, the playful glint replaced with a cold, calculating stare. "Damn it."
"I'll be fine," I said to him smoothly, even though my heart was starting to race. Ever since I've been with Klaus, danger always seems to be lurking around the corner. "Go deal with your psycho dad."
He hesitated, his gaze flickering between me and Tony. "Stay here. Don't go anywhere."
"Yes, dad," I joked, trying to lighten the mood, but judging by the look on his face he wasn't in the mood for jokes.
Once he and Tony were gone, a wave of unease washed over me. I quickly scanned the room, my eyes searching for Raegan. She had been excited about this party all week, she loves a good party even though she doesn't drink one bit. Where had she wandered off to? "Reagan?" I called out, my voice a little too loud in the sudden silence. "Reagan, where are you?"
Panic began to bubble in my chest as I searched the house, growing more and more frantic with each passing second. I checked the kitchen, the living room, even the creepy Lockwood basement, but there was no sign of her. I decided to call her, and it rang and rang and rang, until finally it went straight to voicemail. My breathing shallowed, my vision tunneled. Something was terribly wrong.
"Klaus!" I screamed, running back towards the front of the house, my voice cracking with desperation. I needed him. Now. My feet flew across the lawn, but I stopped dead in my tracks as I reached the doorway.
Standing on the porch, bathed in the eerie glow of the porch light, was Mikael. Klaus's father. The vampire who hunts vampires. But it wasn't just that. In his grasp, he held Raegan, a silver dagger pressed against her throat. Her eyes were wide with terror, and she was shaking like a leaf. I’ve never seen her so scared.
"Hello, Niklaus," Mikael said, his voice a low, menacing growl.
Klaus appeared beside me, his face a mask of fury. "Hello, Mikael. Won't you come in? Oh, that's right. I forgot. You can't."
"Or you can come outside if you want," Mikael countered.
Klaus’s jaw clenched. "Or I can watch my hybrids tear you limb from limb."
"They can't kill me," Mikael sneered, his grip tightening on Raegan.
"True, but it'll make a hell of a party game. All I have to do is rub these two fingers together, and they'll pounce."
"The big bad wolf. You haven't changed. Still hiding behind your playthings like a coward. You only forget. They may be sired by you, but they're still part vampire. And they can be compelled by me."
My mind raced. I had to do something. Anything. I surreptitiously moved to the side of the room as I started to try and think of any kind of spell that could get Raegan out of there safely. I wasn’t some super powerful witch but I was definitely powerful enough, after channeling enough power, to get her out of this mess. My eyes darted from Raegan’s terrified face to Klaus’s furious one, and the only spell that I can think of that would work perfectly and get me in and out was the invisibility spell I learned a few months ago.
"Come out and face me, Niklaus, or she dies," Mikael threatened, the dagger glinting menacingly.
"Go ahead. Kill her," Klaus said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion.
"No, Nik! He'll do it," I cried, my voice cracking with desperation. He didn't understand. Mikael was a madman.
"Hallie, I don’t - what’s happening!" Raegan cried, her eyes darting between Klaus and me, pure fear etched on her face. "What's going on? Hallie, please tell me!"
"I’ll kill this one and that the girl standing next to you. You’ll no longer force them to stand by your side," Mikael sneered.
"I don't need them. I just need to be rid of you," Klaus retorted.
"To what end, Niklaus? So you can live forever with no one at your side? Nobody cares about you anymore, boy! Who do you have other than those whose loyalty you've forced? No one. No one."
"I'm calling your bluff, father. Kill her."
"Come outside and face me, you little coward. And I won't have to."
"My whole life you've underestimated me. If you kill her, you lose your leverage. So go ahead. Go on. Kill her."
Mikael plunged the dagger into Raegan's stomach. She gasped, her eyes widening in shock and pain. She crumpled to the ground, clutching her abdomen. My breath hitched in my throat. Klaus was shocked. He didn’t expect that. Mikael laughed, a cold, cruel sound that echoed through the night.
Suddenly, Damon appeared, staking Klaus with the white oak stake. Klaus screamed, the sound raw and animalistic. The hybrids surged forward, their eyes glowing with predatory hunger. But Damon had missed the heart. He was too slow.
"Invisique," I whispered, casting the invisibility spell on myself. I darted towards Mikael, appearing behind him in a flash. I reached out, grabbing his arm, attempting to siphon his magic. But before I could complete the transfer, he whirled around, his vampire speed catching me off guard. He grabbed me by the throat, his fingers digging into my skin, cutting off my air supply. With his other hand, still holding the dagger, he plunged the silver blade into my side.
I cried out in pain, my vision blurring as darkness threatened to consume me. Damon, enraged, ripped the stake from Klaus’s chest and lunged at him a second time, but Stefan intervened, pushing Damon away. "What are you doing?!" Damon yelled.
The stake lay on the ground next to Klaus. With a snarl, he snatched it up and rushed towards Mikael, knocking him to the ground. Mikael dropped me, and I landed in a heap, pain searing through my body. Klaus didn't hesitate. He plunged the white oak stake into Mikael’s heart. Mikael screamed as his body began to desiccate, turning to ash before our eyes.
Stefan, still standing over Damon as he asked. "What the hell did you do?"
Klaus, breathing heavily, entered the mansion, his eyes fixed on the two brothers. "He's earned his freedom."
Stefan got up and looked at Klaus. "Thank you, my friend. You no longer have to do as I say. You're free."
The world was spinning, the pain excruciating. But I had to focus. I had to get to Raegan. Crawling on my hands and knees, I made my way towards her, my blood leaving a trail on the floor. She was lying on the ground, pale and unresponsive. "Raegan! Raegan, wake up! Please, wake up!" I cried, grabbing her hand.
Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at me, dazed and confused. "Hallie? What… what happened? Where… why is there blood?" She sounded so out of it.
"It's okay, Raegan. Just stay with me. You're going to be okay," I lied, my voice trembling. I knew she needed help, but I didn’t want to blow my cover and show her that magic was real.
I looked around, searching for Klaus. "Klaus! I need you!" In a blur of speed, he was beside me, his eyes filled with concern. He assessed the situation in a heartbeat. Without a word, he bit into his wrist, offering it to me. I shook my head. "Raegan first. Not me."
He hesitated, his gaze searching mine. He knew I was hurt, but he also understood my priority. With a sigh, he knelt beside Raegan, gently tilting her head back and pressing his wrist to her lips. "Drink," he commanded softly.
Raegan coughed, sputtering at the taste of blood. "What… what is this? What's happening to me?"
"Just drink, Raegan. It'll make you feel better," I urged, my voice thick with tears. Klaus and I exchanged a worried look.
As Raegan drank, Klaus's blood healing her wound, I knew this was a turning point. Her world, our world, was about to change forever. Once she had enough, Klaus pulled away, his wrist now dripping with blood. I was next he needed to heal but I decided to wait. He calmly turned to Raegan, his eyes locking with hers.
He compelled her softly. "You will forget everything that has happened tonight. You were attacked, but you were saved. You will not remember who attacked you, or how you were saved. You will only remember that you are safe."
Caroline rushed over, her face etched with concern. "I'll take care of her, Hallie," she said quietly. "I'll make sure she gets home safe."
Caroline helped her up, Raegan leaning heavily on her for support. As they walked away, Raegan’s eyes met mine, still filled with confusion. "Hallie, what was that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "What just happened?"
Before I could answer, Caroline gently led her away, out of earshot. Hot tears streamed down my face as the adrenaline began to wear off. I was starting to feel the pain from my wound and this pain felt worse than the first. I started to hyperventilate. Klaus pulled me into his arms, holding me tight. "It's okay, love. You're safe now," he murmured, his voice soothing. "I've got you."
"She… she doesn't know," I choked out, burying my face in his chest. "She doesn't know about any of this. About you, about me… about the world."
"I know," he said, stroking my hair. "And we will deal with it. Together."
"He stabbed her, Klaus," I sobbed, my body wracked with tremors. "He actually stabbed her. I thought he was bluffing."
"He won't hurt her again. I promise you that," he vowed, his voice hard with resolve.
"It's my fault," I whispered, pulling away from him. "I should have told her. I should have prepared her."
"Don't blame yourself, Hallie," he said, cupping my face in his hands. "You were protecting her. You did what you thought was best."
His gaze drifted to the bleeding knife wound on my stomach. “Can I heal you now, love?”
“Mmm” I made a noise nodding my head yes.
He bit into his wrist, and this time, I didn't protest. Wrapping my fingers around his wrist I surprisingly found the taste to not be as horrible coming from him as it did Damon Salvatore. Klaus gently ran his fingers through my hair with his freehand until he thought I’d had enough. I drank deeply, his blood healing my wound, mending my broken body. But it couldn't mend my broken heart. “There you go, sweetheart. I’ve got you.”
As we drove back to the Mikaelson mansion, the silence in the car was deafening. I stared out the window, watching the world blur by, my mind replaying the events of the night over and over again. "What are we going to do?" I asked finally, my voice barely a whisper.
Klaus reached over, taking my hand in his. "We will protect her, Hallie. We will keep her safe. And we will decide how much she needs to know. Together."
I squeezed his hand, finding a small measure of comfort in his touch. Tonight had changed everything. Raegan was caught in the crossfire, and I had no idea how we were going to navigate this new reality. The only thing I knew for sure was that I would do anything to protect her, even if it meant sacrificing everything.

The leather-bound book sat on my desk, radiating an ominous aura under the soft glow of the lamp. It had been weeks since Uncle Joshua sent it, but every time I reached for it, a wave of anxiety washed over me, and I'd pull back. The Parker family grimoire. My legacy. My burden. I knew what it contained, spells, rituals, and the truth about my siphoner witch abilities. I didn’t want to know. I was living a relatively normal life, dating Klaus, writing country songs, and desperately trying to keep Raegan from figuring out I was anything but human. Ignorance was bliss, right?
A gentle knock pulled me from my thoughts. Caroline peeked her blonde head in. "Hey, you okay? You've been staring at that thing for an hour."
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "I don't know if I can do this, Care," I admitted, the nickname slipping out naturally now. "What if it changes everything?"
Caroline walked over, her face etched with concern. "What's changing everything, Hallie? The book?”
“It’s not just the book. It’s about what I asked you to do to my best friend the other night.”
"It's okay to be scared, Hallie," Caroline’s voice cut through my swirling thoughts. I looked up, meeting her sympathetic gaze. She leaned against the doorway, her blonde hair catching the soft light filtering through the window. "We did what we had to do, compelled her to forget. Raegan's safe."
"Safe and clueless,” I sighed, pushing the book further away. "She deserves to know why I've been so…distant. Why can't I just be the Hallie she grew up with."
Caroline pushed herself off the doorframe, walking towards me. "And how do you explain that, Hallie? 'Hey Raegan, remember that 'sisters pact' we made when we were kids? Well, surprise! I'm not exactly human anymore. Oh, and my boyfriend is an Original vampire-werewolf hybrid who has a complicated history with pretty much everyone in this town?'"
I winced. "When you put it like that…"
"Exactly. Besides, what's in that book that's got you so freaked out?" Caroline gestured towards the leather-bound volume. "It can't be worse than facing down Klaus's enemies. Or being compelled."
"You don't understand. This isn't just about vampires and werewolves, Caroline. This is about…me. About what I am. A siphon witch," I whispered the last part, a knot forming in my stomach. "Raegan can't know that, she can't handle it."
Caroline frowned. "Hallie, you're amazing. And Raegan loves you. She's tougher than you think."
"Easy for you to say, newbie vampire," I mumbled, earning a playful shove from her.
"Hey! I'm handling it pretty well, thank you very much. And so will you. Look, forget the creepy family history for now.” The blonde vampire sat down on top of the wooden desk, staring down at me,
“How much longer do you think we can keep it up?" I asked, glancing at Caroline.
Caroline paused before answering me. “Well, as long as we have to, I guess. It’s what you wanted. Besides, she seems really happy, Hallie. You know how much she’s wanted a normal life since the system?”
Caroline was so right. Raegan had always craved normalcy, something we both lacked growing up in the foster system. We’d made a pact then, a sister’s pact, to always have each other's backs, to protect each other. I just never imagined that protection would involve hiding a whole supernatural world.
"Maybe you're right. Maybe I'm just overthinking things."
Caroline grinned, clapping her hands together. "Exactly! Now, enough moping. You need a distraction, and I have the perfect one. Homecoming Dance!"
I stared at her, dumbfounded. "Caroline, I'm in my mid-twenties. High school dances are not my thing."
"Come on, Hallie! It'll be fun! Besides, everyone is going. And, you need a new dress." She glanced at my very casual attire.
"I still don't know, Care."
"I'm not taking no for an answer. We're going shopping, and we're bringing backup." She pulled out her phone. "I'll call Rebekah and Raegan. A girls' day out is exactly what you need."
An hour later, we were tearing through the Mystic Falls boutiques. Rebekah, with her impeccable fashion sense, was already pulling dresses off the racks. Raegan, surprisingly, was just as enthusiastic, her excitement infectious.
"So, we're actually doing this?" Raegan asked, arms crossed defensively. "Going to a high school dance? You know I hated those things when we were in the foster system."
"Consider it an anthropological study," I said with a wink. "Besides, Caroline twisted my arm. Said I needed a night off from drama."
"Okay, so, I know I'm older than these kids, but I've never actually been to a homecoming dance," Raegan admitted, twirling in front of a mirror in a shimmering silver dress. "Foster homes never really threw these kinds of parties."
My heart ached for her. "Well, then, we're making this one count," I declared, grabbing a sparkly black dress and shoving it into her hands. "Try this on. You'll look amazing."
Rebekah chuckled, eyeing a particularly scandalous red dress. "Trust me, darlings, you'll both look ravishing. Although, I do hope there are some eligible bachelors at this little shindig. Mystic Falls is dreadfully boring."
I rolled my eyes. "Rebekah, you're dating Matt, don't start."
"Details, details," she waved her hand dismissively. "A girl can always look, can't she?"
As we shopped, Raegan kept shooting curious glances my way. "So, Hallie," she began casually, "how are things with Klaus?"
"Good," I said, a little too quickly. "Really good. He's been… understanding."
"Understanding of what, exactly?" she pressed, her eyes narrowing slightly.
My palms started to sweat. "Just… my music. He's been really supportive of my songwriting."
"Hmm," she hummed, unconvinced. "He seems like a complicated guy."
"He is," I admitted, relieved the conversation hadn't gone in a different direction. "But he's… worth it."
Rebekah, sensing the tension, swooped in. "Speaking of complicated, Raegan, darling, tell me, what do you think of my brother?"
Raegan laughed. "Klaus? He's… interesting. Definitely not boring. But there's something about him, something he's not telling me."
Rebekah's eyes widened slightly, and I shot her a warning look. She quickly recovered, feigning innocence. "Oh, you know how men are," she said airily. "Full of secrets and brooding intensity."
I squeezed Rebekah’s upper arm, giving her the “play along” move. She caught on quickly.
The rest of the afternoon was filled with laughter and chatter, a welcome distraction from the looming Parker grimoire. By the time we headed back to the mansion, I was actually looking forward to the dance.
But, as fate would have it, our plans were thwarted. As we were getting ready for the dance, a frantic Caroline burst into my room. "It's off!" she announced breathlessly. "The Homecoming Dance is canceled!."
"Seriously?" I groaned. "All that shopping for nothing?"
"Not necessarily," Raegan said, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I heard they're moving the party to the Lockwood mansion."
"The Lockwood mansion?" I repeated, surprised. "That's going to be a disaster waiting to happen."
"Maybe," she shrugged. "But it'll be a fun disaster. Come on, Hallie, live a little!"
And so, despite my reservations, I found myself at the Lockwood mansion later that night. The music was deafening, the crowd was a mix of teenagers and vampires, and the air was thick with anticipation. I spotted Caroline making her way over to us. She had a slight glare in her eyes and I already knew what she was going to say. “Hallie. You know that you have to be careful tonight, right? There are a lot of vampires, and some humans, who could get hurt if you’re not careful.” She said, her voice laced with concern.
“ I know, Caroline. I can handle myself. Besides, It’s Raegan that you should be worried about the most. Not me. As long as she’s here, I’m not going to use my powers. I don’t want her knowing about this life, okay?” I replied, trying to keep my voice down so Raegan couldn’t hear.
“Okay, Hallie. Just be careful.” Caroline squeezed my arm and disappeared into the crowd.
I was dancing with Raegan, trying to match her enthusiasm, when a familiar voice cut through the noise. "Enjoying yourselves, ladies?" I turned to see Klaus standing there, a playful smirk on his face. He looked devastatingly handsome in a dark suit, and my heart skipped a beat.
"Klaus! What are you doing here?" I squealed, surprised racing into his waiting arms. "I thought you were still out of town."
"I decided to come home early," he said, his eyes fixed on me before he gently caged me in familiar arms., holding me for a moment before I pulled back. "I couldn't miss seeing you in that dress."
I blushed, smoothing down the fabric. The one I had picked out was a dark red short sleeveless that fell down to my knees but skin tight fitting to my body, paired with my light brown cowgirl boots. My hair loosely flowing down my back. “You shouldn't have. You know I hate those kinds of dresses"
"Nonsense," he said, pulling me closer. "You look absolutely breathtaking."
Raegan cleared her throat, reminding us that she was still there. "Well, I'll leave you two lovebirds alone," she said, winking at me. "I'm going to find something to drink."
As she walked away, Klaus pulled me into a tight embrace. "I missed you," he whispered in my ear, planting a kiss on my forehead.
"I missed you too," I replied, burying my face in his chest.
Klaus brushed a hand over my face moving some strands of hair that attempted to fall in front of my eyes with a curious smile on his lips. “I thought you thought we were too old for these things.”
I said, running my hands up his chest, my eyes falling on his dark, classic suit and tie. "Besides, someone had to keep an eye on these hooligans."
"Is that what we are now? Chaperones?" He chuckled, pulling me closer. "Don't let it go to your head. I'm still the most dangerous creature in this town.”
“Oh, I’m sure,” I said sarcastically while playfully shoving him away from me. “You’re dating your number one enemy, aren’t you? That’s gotta be a record.”
He laughed, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “You wound me, love. Are you going to make me beg for a dance?”
“Maybe,” I teased, pretending to consider it. “Depends. Are you going to step on my toes?”
“Never,” he said, grabbing my hand and leading me onto the dance floor.
We swayed to the music, lost in our own little world, when Stefan suddenly appeared, his face grim."Klaus, we need to talk," he said, his voice urgent.
Klaus sighed, pulling away from me. "What is it, Stefan? Can't it wait?"
"It's Mikael," Stefan said, his voice barely above a whisper. "He's dead."
Klaus froze, his expression unreadable. I watched as a storm of emotions flickered across his face – disbelief, anger, and something that looked suspiciously like grief. "How?" he finally asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"Damon and I managed to vervain him. Elena daggered him," Stefan explained to him.
The music faded into the background as Klaus's anger intensified. I knew what was coming, a torrent of rage that would consume everything in its path. "Klaus, don't," I pleaded, grabbing his arm. "Not here. Not now."
He looked down at me, his eyes softening slightly. "I can't promise anything, Hallie," he said, his voice strained. "But I'll try."
“Okay.” I mumbled, squeezing his hand.
He took a deep breath, his face a mask of control. "Come," he said, leading me away from the dance floor. "I want to see his body. But that can wait after we get some drinks.."
As we walked away, I cast a worried glance over my shoulder. Raegan was laughing with some friends, oblivious to the chaos that was about to unfold. I knew that I couldn't protect her from everything, but I could try. I had to. The night was far from over, and the Parker grimoire was still sitting on my desk, waiting to be opened. But, for now, I had a different battle to fight – a battle to protect my loved ones from the darkness that threatened to consume us all. And maybe, just maybe, I could find a way to do it without revealing my secret to the one person I was trying to protect the most.
don't feel bad, Caroline. this is just a patricidal celebration long in the making, people do go all out in those xD
I love the way she words things. you POET.
