Most people wish for a devoted husband.
Many people want a partner or someone to spend their entire lives with, it is an admiring goal to have, to have a long time loyal partner, growing old together, going through the thick and thin. Their bond so strong that they would reach the ends of the universe if possible just to prove that they would never falter in their relationship.
And yet the process is tough and painful to deal with.
Every murmur of a ‘where’s your boyfriend?’ ‘Are you even trying hard enough?’ And even the occasional ‘oh poor you, maybe you not showing yourself more?’
It was hell with the family you have, the frustration of being unable to tell them off without getting lectured on how disrespectful you were being to your elders, how you should continue the family line. Be a dutiful wife and quit your job so you could wait on your husband hand and foot. How utterly pathetic….
Hm maybe you should…. AFTER you finished your job within the Foundation.
You were still young, you could find a match when you weren’t swamped with field missions and reports, when they didn’t need someone who had the unique skillset that your job required. You honestly needed a way to shut them up.
And it seemed that your wish- or probably the wish of your nosy relatives, was granted.
A young man: serious, new, long dark hair, posture strict and proud, eyes sharp with conviction, armor that seemed to come from hundreds of years ago, yet he looked so much like those male leads that your cousins and aunties both fawn over and wish to have, basically the dream boy.
The first interaction you had, was ironic enough, a bump, you had accidentally dropped your reports, and trying to pick them up, someone else came to help, and instead of turning your head up, you ended up bumping your head against his. Horror ensued as you were embarrassed, trying to apologize only to bump into him again, yet he seemed to apologize to you.
In the end, it became clear- both of you were awkward as hell around each other, it was like any professionalism was canceled out and only left utter embarrassment and confusion between you two.
It wasn’t long til you found out that Team Timekeeper had a new person join them, every day you hear about the new Arcanist or whatever person come to join the timekeeper, and this guy was most recent alongside an immortal Daoist.
Cheng Heguang, once a Chief Constable, trapped in a tree for hundreds of years you heard, and now an arcanist that was just trying to make sense of this new time period. He was still learning English, with a bit of help of translation through Getian.
And yet now- you had a plan and in making your family shut up.
It was quite a plan, to ask him to be a fake date, if he could understand such a thing, a modern person like you asking for a courtship that was absent in the aspect of sincerity to deceive your family?
Now it did sound wrong when saying it out loud… oh well, nothing like a toss of a coin flip to gamble on your life!
At first, you spoke with him through Getian- nothing to shock him, only in some light ‘normal’ conversation, and Getian was repeating Heguang’s responses back to you, and you were determined in making sure that the Arcanist was comfortable with the idea of being around your family…..
At least for a day or two…..
And when you finally admitted to the plan to Heguang, at first Getian was surprised, albeit reluctant in translating, but judging by the pink hue coloring Heguang’s cheeks and the flustered way his eyes softened and the subtle bite into his lip, he seemed to understand a-plenty.
Good.
At first, you tried to make Heguang understand it, just a meeting and nothing more, just long enough to get your parents- and the rest of your family to back off and be satisfied with the idea of you finally settling down, let them live nonetheless the wiser about you telling a little white lie.
You would lie if you had said that you didn’t feel scared about the prospect of Heguang not agreeing or outright rejecting you. But to your joy, he had actually accepted the plan, and with your determination renewed, you started to once again turn those gears in your head to plan for the fated meeting with your family.
First, some rehearsal, teaching him your likes and dislikes, every little habit and ticks, just in case if your family grill him on your entire history, and as soon as he learned your habits, even gifting him a tiny book that you had written yourself as a reference, you moved onto the next phase, fabricating everything into how you and Cheng Heguang met.
How you and him met one day, him bumping into you and helping you out, and you asking him out, how you pursue and him returning your affections, hand holding, fishing on the weekends- specifically sundays- where it lined up with the times you had stayed in your room and had done nothing but eat junk food and read novels, just so your parents wouldn’t figure out what you had actually been lazing around than finding a match like you promised.
And throughout the week, you had done nothing but dedicate to the ‘fake schedule’, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, done nothing but work, and Cheng Heguang visiting you, on each day, to bring you a surprisingly hearty meal. And on Saturday, Heguang had bring you a full meal of grilled fish that was stuffed with its cooked meat and some bits of sesame seeds, abundance of steamed rice that was still having a tail of steam rolling of it like a decorated banner, flat bread or hu bing that was tucked neatly to the side for your personal disposal, pickled vegetables that had this wonderful aroma with sauce that made any picky eater water in their mouth, it just was delicious, maybe he had accidentally overdone it when he brought you an obviously handwoven food carrier, made by him, and just for you.
Either way, a hearty meal that was hand cooked? Your family would instantly fawn over such things, worship it even…. considering your male relatives would have been celebrated for simply doing their own dishes.
What idiots, you silently thought with an admittedly strong resentment, though your glare was instantly blinked away by embarrassment as you noticed Cheng Heguang was holding your hand, his gaze with concern for you.
His gaze was…. Soft…
You instantly widened your eyes as you looked again at your hand holding his, both of you were flustered, yet both of you were reluctant to part- or at least be the jackass that recoil away first. Your tense posture slowly relax a bit as Cheng Heguang’s thumb rubbed soothing slow circles on the back of your hand, brushing against your knuckles.
This wasn’t distracting you from your goal. You reaffirmed yourself, your stubborn belief of not faltering and proving a means to an end so that you could live your life in peace, hopefully unmarried and not having to worry about being a housewife….
And that day finally came when you circled the date in your calendar, the exact time of your family’s monthly meeting. Usually it was the time when you would bite your tongue and endure their prodding of ‘where’s your boyfriend?’ Or ‘have you found a match yet?’, the insulting way their gaze looked down on you like some disappointment, like seeing a bird not singing or a cat being ‘difficult’, a cow unable to produce milk or yield good meat.
A scheming smile was on your face, one of pride, of a pleasure being derived by the idea of you proving your elders wrong, to be the one to look down on them instead of you sputtering to make excuses, it was an immature act- a sinful emotion to be shameful of, but what about you?! Why can’t you just at least savor this one act of victory!?
You practically puff up with a pride as you strolled in with Cheng Heguang, your parents and relatives that once hold the face of expecting you being empty handed once again, only to be shocked when you were practically hanging off the arm of a handsomely beautiful man. You practically had to hold back from making a mocking expression towards your envious cousins, you were just basking in this savory taste of finally getting to receive favor.
And with your rehearsal, you were swinging those questions, meant to humiliate or catch you off guard, back to your now envious family, oh the victory was way too much, you wanted to gloat and smirk with a near evil expression….
And yet….
“And when are you going to quit your job and start settling down? Have children” Questioned your own mother….. everyone stilled, their irises darting over to peer over at you, pupils small yet felt as big as camera lenses hoping to snap a picture and immortalizing you visage of weakness, like cobras watching for an ounce, a crack, a slip.
It really was your own parents that were your worst enemies….
You didn’t remember that…. You couldn’t have remembered it……. Not when how much of that blatant misogyny made you want to cut off your own ears and make you scream at your mother for shooting you in the damn foot…… being reduced to nothing but some kind of machine meant for popping out babies and human beings that would just repeat the cycle of what you were currently going through….
You stilled…. Your brow uneasy as you didn’t have an answer, not one that was performed…. You couldn’t open your mouth like your gullet was stuffed with a toad, you felt ashamed, you felt like once again you had to bite your tongue and wait for the incoming lecture……. Just waiting for the inevitable end of once again bowing your head and forced to go along with their whims with a bitten tongue.
And yet, out of all odds, Heguang had come to your aide….
“You misunderstand ma’am, but [Name] won’t be quitting her job to care for the household, I have already prepared to take up that role.” Cheng Heguang said while your parents only looked as though they were slapped in the face, your relatives’ expressions were caught off guard as though Heguang had flipped a table of food, even your grandparents looked aghast by such words being woven together to even be uttered.
“It is for [Name] to determine the best time for children and settling down. I will follow their wishes as best as I uphold my duties as vigilant as possible….. it is their choice. Not any of yours.” Cheng Heguang said, not backing down from the bite in his tone, he didn’t care if he was disrespectful, he only cared about defending your decision, your dignity, your will.
And he wasn’t going to sit still and watch you be disrespected. He didn’t need the approval of your family anyways… not when your approval mattered the most…. For better or for worse….
———
That was….. quite the scene…
You sighed, one mixed with exasperation yet relief all the same…. You just felt content, your family wasn’t calling or contacting you…. Not as often…. And surprisingly, some relatives, mostly the cowards of the family suddenly begged for your forgiveness, you haven’t seen them cried and plead for such a thing before….
Maybe it was about that small banquet, but you really felt like you were on top of the world, like you were free of the reins that your family weighed on you….
And all thanks to your ‘husband’…..
Which currently, you were fishing with him, a bit tricky with the fishing line, and Cheng Heguang and you and to learn how to work the current modern new fishing lines, yet it was almost fun to do together…..
“Wow… you’re terrible at this!” You teased as Cheng fell into the water as he wrestled with the fish, you practically threw the next over both him and his catch, but at least the fish wasn’t able to get away as you dragged him and the fish onto the shore, panting yet satisfied.
“Not too bad yourself…!” Cheng bite back as you only scoffed playfully, holding your catch of just a small baby looking bass fry.
“Still can’t believe that you talk back to my parents though…. Your ass is so dead….” You said as you toss back the tiny fry, Cheng only holding up the larger fish by its gills before putting it into the basket.
“Ah….. I don’t think we should worry about your family’s nagging anymore…. After all, you have me to help you now… at your beck and call… even at my expense… I will protect you….” Heguang said as he held his hands together, his palm against his fist in a sort of gesture that you recognized as a sort of military salute…. Almost like a control over his strength.
His upmost priority in being by your side…..
“Oh…. You…. You’re making me look lousy-!” You said before you finally just grab him by the cheeks of his face, your lips pressing against his forehead, unable to resist giving him a couple of affectionate kisses that made him gasp, flustered as though you were showing him the wonders of French kissing.
And yet Cheng Heguang didn’t stop you, in fact, his hands slowly moved to sit on your hips, pulling you closer before he slowly pressed his own lips against your skin, as soft as falling leave landing against the still lake, small ripples of sensation within your skin as your body felt content…..
You just felt, protected, like you would never have to endure humiliation or be downtrodden with the expectations of your family weighing in to control you….. not when Cheng Heguang devoted his strength in such a matter.
“Are you… sure you want to be with me?…. I’m probably lazy by your time’s standards…” you said earnestly before Cheng Heguang only cradled your cheek with one of his hands, his eyes softened, he just looked so pretty in the sunset light, even if the two of you were simply fishing.
“As repeatedly as a lotus flower recoiling from the winter to grow again to full bloom in the spring, I will do my best to love you again and again, as eternal as a jade’s prosperity, my lian… Xīn gān…” Cheng said with a soft grin as his cheeks flushed with a hue of that of a plum blossom as red as blood, his eyes almost glazed with an infatuation that seemed to bordered onto the obsessively devoted… you almost felt entranced by it until his lips touched yours, your body leaned into his.
Until you two fell over, tripped by his own basket, and the large fish starting to flail around to make its daring escape.
“Oh great job lover boy! Our dinner is practically running away before you make it throw up from your corny confession!” You sputtered as your face was as red as an apple while Cheng Heguang only let out a laugh, just charmed by your flustered yet bashful expression, before you were practically pouncing after the currently slippery escapee, Cheng Heguang quickly followed your lead, both of you obviously and stupidly bumping into each other and not working coherently to get the fish.
And while the two of you were stupid around each other, you had something that many people would have wished so desperately to the point of ruin…..
A truly Loyal husband….
