!! Inspo for shotgunning smoke lowkey taken from @murdock-slvt !!
The cigarette burned low between his fingers, a thin ribbon of smoke curling in the still air. Matheo’s jaw worked once, slow and deliberate, before he exhaled. The smoke drifted toward you- not aimed, but close enough to make you flinch. His eyes- usually pools of honey and caramel, soft towards you- were hard. He'd had enough of you today.
You hated when he smoked, but you couldn't bring yourself to scold him this time. Not when your punishments were already bound to be piled heavy after your day of snapping and hurling stinging insults at him. All over a bad grade on a test. In hindsight, shouting at him in front of everyone and voicing your ridiculous insecurities about the- absolutely trash- possibility of him cheating on you really wasn't that good of an idea.
“You really don’t know when to stop talking, do you?” His voice was quiet, too quiet, like the space between thunder and the strike.
If you had just told him what was on your mind, tonight would have gone a lot more different. You'd be cuddling, for one. He'd have distracted you from the grade. Tonight, could have been sweet. But you just had to be mouthy. And for what? Because some bitch from Ravenclaw riled you up about that one bad grade.
You sat rigid in the chair, arms crossed, pretending the scent of ash and mint didn’t make your chest tighten with anxiety and anticipation. “You asked for honesty.” You say, voice trembling. It's meant to be brave, but it comes out shaky.
He gave a short laugh, low and humorless, dark predatory eyes flicking up to you. “Honesty, yes. Not insolence.” He took another drag, eyes fixed on you the entire time, as if every breath was measured retribution. The smoke hung between you like a warning. Foreshadowing what was to come. "Calling me a fucking cheater." He spits out, the anger coming out for a second before he reigns it in again, retreating behind his mask of coldness.
“You think you can bite, but you don’t even know the taste of consequence.” His gaze flicked to the faint trail of smoke twisting toward you, then back to your eyes. His lips quirked up in a mocking smile. “Maybe one day you’ll learn.”
You wanted to say something sharp, something that would sting, but the air was already heavy with his silence. "God baby," he says, with an amused smirk. "Knew you thought bad of yourself, but you really think that little of me?" Your stomach was churning, and you wondered faintly if the waiting was as much punishment as what he was going to do. The world seemed to narrow in the dizzying smoke- the glowing ember, the slow curl of white, his unreadable stare.
He didn’t need to raise his voice. You sat there, breathing in the ghost of defiance, heart already pounding.
He stood so suddenly the chair scraped against the floor. For a heartbeat, you thought he might actually walk away. You weren't sure if it comforted or panicked you. Instead, he took one last drag, eyes locked on yours and stepped closer- close enough that you could see the ember flare between his fingers.
“You really know how to test my patience, don't you baby?” he murmured.
You didn’t flinch, even when he leaned in. The smoke drifted out in a slow exhale, curling around your face like a challenge. It wasn’t harsh- not yet anyway- just deliberate, his way of reminding you who held the calm, who set the pace. The smell of smoke curled in with his cologne- bergamot and mint. You weren't sure whether to lean in and let it intoxicate you or push him away so you could breathe.
You forced your gaze to not drop, even as the smoke made breathing in feel like running a marathon. "Is this my punishment?" You whisper shakily. God you hated the smell of cigarettes.
A ghost of a smirk tugged at his mouth. “Not even close.”
The silence that followed was thick, the kind that hummed in the air long after the smoke had faded.
His hand shot out to grab your jaw so quick you flinched backwards. His lips quirked up, other hand finding itself between your head and the wall before the dull thud could happen.
You weren't sure whether you wanted to kiss him for being so thoughtful or strangle him for this game he was playing. Not that you had the courage to do either. He was smirking but you knew better. You could see the anger he was trying to reign in, and the cigarette was too close to your face for your liking.
"You know I wouldn't hit you baby." He drawls, amused. Another inhale of the cigarette. The hand on your jaw squeezed your mouth open. Your eyes widened, but he'd already exhaled into your mouth before you could pull away. His had moved, palm flat over your mouth. "Inhale." He said lowly, hand clamped tight on your face, unreadable eyes boring holes into yours.
A hot, acrid cloud flooded your mouth, carrying the taste of him- of coffee and the cloying sweetness of his smoke. Your eyes flew wide. You tried to pull back, but his hand was firm on the back of your neck, clamped over your mouth, holding you there. Your throat locked, a frantic, biological "no," but it was too late. The smoke was already a solid weight, pushing down, a thick, unwelcome tide invading your chest.
"That's it baby, take it all in." He murmurs, amusement in his eyes as he looks at you.
The convulsion started deep in your diaphragm, a violent, wrenching spasm that felt like your whole body was trying to turn itself inside out. A ragged, choking cough tore through you, hands flying to paw at his tight grip over your mouth. Tears streamed down from your stinging eyes, as you choked on the smoke.
His grip on your neck loosened, like a man releasing a tool he’s finished with. His hand fell away, and you slumped back, your hands flying from his wrist to massage your throat, as if you could tear the violation out by the roots.
The air you gasped was cold and shocking, a stark contrast to the furnace-heat of his shared breath. But it didn’t cleanse. Each ragged inhale was still laced with the ghost of the smoke, the taste of him now a permanent stain at the back of your tongue. Your chest hitched, the violent coughs subsiding into weak, watery sputters.
BONUS SCENE
He moved closer, hands pulling your heaving form closer to him, until your forehead rested against his collarbone and he was rubbing your back gently. "That's it, did so good for me baby. Deep breaths, sweetheart." He coaxes, presses a soft kiss to your temple as your shuddering breaths finally calm down. "There's my girl," he coos, pulling away slightly as you sniffle. "No tears, sweet girl."
You sniffled, slumping into him. "I hate cigarettes." You mumble, voice hoarse. It elicits a laugh out of him as he puts it out on the ashtray on the coffee table. "I know sweetheart. But you were being a brat," He coos, kissing your forehead again.
You sigh, leaning into him. "Don't you dare ever do-"
He laughs again, kissing your neck softly. "I'll try baby."
"Sadist."
"The fact that I get off on you choking and crying isn't a new thing, sweetheart." He murmurs, pulling you into his arms and carrying you to the bed. "But I promise to keep the choking somewhat limited to during se-"
"Matheo."
You both lay on your sides facing each other on the bed, the only sound the soft whisper of rain against the windowpane. His finger was tracing idle patterns on your arm, but his gaze had grown distant, then focused. The darker side of him was gone now, but that playful light in his eyes was gone too, replaced by a quiet intensity that made your stomach clench, anxiety brimming your eyes once again.
“Hey,” he said softly, his voice low and devoid of its earlier teasing. His eyes were serious now, looking into yours.
“Hey,” you whispered back, the word feeling small and shaky. You swallowed hard, trying to bury the rising panic. You knew this conversation needed to happen.
His fingers stilled on your skin, holding you there not with force, clearing his throat slightly. “What you said earlier… about me cheating.” He let the words hang in the air, a cold, hard fact. You flinched, guilt entering your own eyes. “Don’t. Don’t ever call me a cheater again, baby.”
The pet name wasn’t sweet this time; it was an anchor, holding the weight of his words, the heavy pain and betrayal in his words.
“I know you were smarting from that bitch’s words and that red mark on your parchment that you allow to dictate your worth for some reason,” he continued softly, his eyes searching yours, refusing to let you look away. He can see the guilt, clear as day, but he needs to get this out. “You can be as mouthy as you like with others. Throw a hex, throw a punch, throw a fucking tantrum. But not with me. You don’t get to take that hurt and turn it into a weapon against me. You don’t get to accuse me of something that would never, ever happen.”
Tears welled in your eyes, hot and shameful. The defensiveness, the bratty anger, it all crumbled under the quiet, unshakable truth in his voice. “I know,” you whisper, voice shaky and cracking with guilt. “Matheo, I’m so sorry. I know you wouldn’t. I just… I felt so stupid, and I took it out on you.”
He stays silent for a long moment, just watching you, letting the apology sit between you, before he sighs, nodding slightly. "I know." He says quietly. He reaches out finally, his thumb catching a tear that's escaping down your cheek. His touch was firm, grounding, making you shudder in relief.
“I know you were,” he said, his voice softening just a fraction. “But my loyalty isn’t up for debate. Not even when you’re feeling small. Understand?”
You nodded quickly, swallowing the lump in your throat. “I understand. It won’t happen again.”
“Good.” He leaned forward, pressing a firm, lingering kiss to your forehead.
