At long last, the day arrived. Fingon’s mother straightened his purple bowtie; his father pinned a sky blue boutonnière to his lapel. Turgon straightened his collar and told him to stand up straighter, to which Fingon made a stupid joke about nothing being straight here. Elenwë, eight months pregnant, rolled her eyes and tugged her husband out of the room, while Aredhel laughed brightly in her pure white dress.
“Anyone who doesn’t know would think I’m getting married,” she joked, twirling around.
Her outfit was not as voluminous as a wedding gown, but Fingon indulged her. She was so happy—so free. She had just finally gained full legal custody over Maeglin, who at nearly two years old was being carried around by his Uncle Argon, home early from his first year of college. Aredhel was now even considering changing her last name from Black to White instead of back to Smith, just to spite her no-good convict ex-husband. (Eöl, it turned out, had a history of not only abuse but also tax fraud, blackmailing, and even arson. Once the eye of the law was fixed on him, he hadn’t been able to wiggle his way out of a prison sentence for at least the next decade.)
“My bride is prettier,” Fingon teased, only for her to whack him on the cheek with her bouquet. A daisy fell onto the ground, but neither she nor Fingon really cared. Argon gently picked up the fallen flower and tucked it behind Maeglin’s ear. The little lad giggled, and whispered something into Argon’s ear.
The day was finally, finally here.
