It comes about quite by accident.

They are watching a shitty romance film on TV. Tane sits on the plush carpet between Riona’s legs as she cards her fingers through his hair, marvelling at how soft it is even though he insists he uses 3-in-1 (for the first time, she thinks that her new boyfriend might actually be a liar, and wouldn’t that be ironic?).

And then it happens. She accidentally brushes manicured nails over the shaved sides of his head, and he moans.

Not the way he usually moans, low and throaty and entreating. This is quiet and calm and apparently involuntary – he doesn’t seem to realise he has done it until he shifts a little under her hands, which have stilled on him.

“E ipo?” Riona knows that Tane worries about her watching romance films, worries that they will bring back bad memories (since Bobby had clearly modelled himself on the leading men from these films, with his charming smile and extravagant gestures hiding something rotten) and she feels guilty for a brief moment, before running her nails over the skin above his left ear to try and cover her hesitation.

A shiver ripples through him, and now he has stilled, calm and unmoving as a statue underneath her, between her thighs.

The thought of him between her thighs hardly helps matters. Nor does it help when he turns to face her, takes her chin in between his finger and thumb and guides their lips together, moving in a rhythm that only they understand and that steals her breath away, and—

And it certainly does not help when he turns back around to watch the rest of the film, a smile playing on his lips.

Always amazing and wonderful Riona, a question! What is your favorite thing about Tane? What drew you to him?

“Sound like you have a fan, chook.” Tane smiles warmly, curls a chocolate brown tendril round one finger as Riona tries to think.

“Shh.” The admonition is half-hearted at best, the flush high on her cheekbones and the way she has to bite her lower lip to suppress her smile a testament to that, and the flush does nothing but intensify when he moves closer, coiling an arm around her waist.

“Why?” Tane buries his nose in Riona’s curls, sniffs deeply, and Riona’s resolve to remain if not professional then at least decent fade away.

“Because.” The lame response is exhaled on a sigh even as she leans into his touch. He offers no further comment, merely tilting his head to press soft lips to her temple.

Riona seems to have to shake herself, clear her throat roughly, then smile at you again.

“Sorry about that.” The muscles in her throat work a little as she pointedly avoids looking at Tane, unwilling to be distracted again. “I guess—well, what drew me to him was—”

“My magnetic charm? My devastating good looks? The Adonis-like perfection of my body?”

“Your humility?” Riona cocks a brow, but cannot maintain the expression in the face of his smile, and how he draws her tighter into the circle of his arms.

“Touché. Well, what do you like most, then?”

Riona traces a finger along the cut of his bicep, opens her mouth to comment but then seems to think better of it before addressing you.

“His smile, I think. There’s a lot of warmth there, and I l—I like that.” Feels her cheeks heat a little at the almost-slip, and when she looks again at Tane there’s something soft behind his usual smile, even when he presses his lips close to her ear and murmurs faintly.

“I like you, too.”

And as they curl around each other, honeysuckle and hazel, you get the distinct feeling that they might have forgotten the question - or else found a different type of answer.
