Before getting into the actual epsiode, I just want to say real quick that Glenn looks awesome in that bulletproof vest. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We pick up right where we left off last ep, Daryl having spotted the prisoners, and there’s a short confrontation between the main group and the prisoners before our mains hurry back. I love how after having been alone for fuck knows how long, the prisoners witness the main group barge in, covered in gore, perform an impromptu amputation, point an arrow at them, kill a monster and fuck off again just like that. LMAO can you imagine?
The inmates follow and after some initial Voice of Reasoning by Rick, there’s the usual arguing about who gets to stay where and if the newcomers should leave or die or what. I get a little tired of that kinda thing but there’s this gem:
Prisoner: “You snatched the locks off our doors!” Rick: “...we’ll give you new locks, if that’s how you want it?”
Bless. While the boys are fighting, Hershel is pretty much dying. When he’s all bandaged and all they can do is wait for him to wake up, there’s a really touching moment where Maggie tells him it’s ok to stop fighting. It was sad and horrible but appropriate, imo, and I respect Maggie for it.
The prisoners and our group have made a deal that they clear another cellblock for the prisoners to use together, and they share the remaining food 50/50. The prisoners are given instructions on how to go about killing walkers, and of course comedic chaos ensues. Them doing everything they weren’t supposed to was great; I love feeling superior over things I’d definitely be worse at myself. But then the big prisoner, who I think is called Tiny, gets bitten and offed. He was the one who had already made himself my favorite by addressing the Inmate in Charge and Daryl as “children” to get them to stop yelling/possibly murdering each other. RIP Tiny :(
As they continue killing walkers, Inmate in Charge tries to off Rick by swinging a bat at him and pushing a walker towards him. It doesn’t work. It’s awkward. After Shane, Rick knows all about how to spot someone pretending to be pals but who’s actually trying to kill you, so he gets it over with and kills Inmate in Charge. Another prisoner (the one who was concerned about the locks, bless) ends up running and gets locked out with the walkers. Harsh. I know, we’re trying to survive and I don’t blame people for being cautious but there’s a chance he just panicked because his buddy just died in front of him and he didn’t actually want to kill Rick, right? Am I too hopeful? Well, I’m not the one with experience in being wanted dead so w/e.
Over in the Hershel plot, Hershel has stopped breathing and could be turning into a bitey undead monster at any moment, and Lori does the incredibly brave thing and gives mouth-to-mouth to a man who could be turning into a bitey undead monster at any moment. It works, everyone’s happy, Hershel’s our first(?) disabled character on the show. (...barring the walkers.)
Having succesfully cleared a cellblock, the two remaining prisoners get manhandled into their new home. I feel so bad for them, after all the shit they’ve been through with corpse monsters and half of their group dying and now being pushed around when there’s really no need for that :( They immediately become upset about the DEAD BODIES OF THEIR FORMER FRIENDS on the floor where they’re supposed to live, and our boys manage to look shamefaced and sympathetic about that.
These are the last lines before each of our boys leave the prisoners: [all in soft tones] Daryl: “You think this is sick? You don’t wanna know what’s outside.” Rick: “Consider yourselves the lucky ones.” Daryl: “Sorry about your friends, man.” T-Dog: “Word of advice...take those bodies outside and burn ‘em.”
And is it just me or does Rick sound a lot harsher/darker in that scene than T-Dog and Daryl? I don’t mean to criticize Rick all the time but I’m a little sad that he’s become more of a hardass on top of more pragmatic. I feel like in season 1 and much of 2 his lines and delivery in this scene would’ve been switched with Daryl’s, maybe. It’s probably what the story is going for, though?
ANYWAY. Carol has been doing her own gross thing during much of that, namely practicing a C-section on a dead walker, so that’s fun. It’s such a good idea but the scene disgusts me so so much. Worse than the scene where Rick and Daryl search a walker’s stomach.
Oh and Lori and Rick have been having some couple trouble. I’m not super invested in them as a couple and I’m not really worried about this as a plotline either, since so far they’ve dealt with any relationship drama very un-annoyingly, but it kills me when Rick can’t seem to look Lori in the eye. Kills me.
"We've been through so much already."
