The Twelve Dancing Princesses Sheila Robinson There were a surprising number of proposed Puffin Picture Books that for one reason or another never made it to publication. This beautiful dummy by Sheila Robinson was designed in the immediate post-war years whilst she was a student at the Royal College under Bawden. Sadly it coincided with Allen Lane’s decision at Penguin to jettison all the fiction titles from the Puffin Picture Book list, so it was rejected. First of all, Jeté is a Black albino girl! I know and love the fact that the Dancers are a Black Royal family, and I wanted to include as much diversity that exists in the Black community as I could. It's only Twelve characters, but they are made with pride, love and respect. Hope someone sees themselves in them, truly. When I got the idea, I knew It, I would do the most I could to bring diverse skin tones and hair textures, hairstyles, and black bodies, so at least one person could see themselves.
