Immortal spirits
So I’ve just put a few things together and realised something that works so buckle in because you’re about to have your socks blown off
Cannot believe I didn’t realise this like 10 years ago when The Guide came out
Here we go:
Some background: in the Twilight universe, the wolves got their power from Chief Taha Aki. He left his body to go into the spirit world, and another man called Utlapa entered his body and used it, pretending to be Taha Aki. Taha Aki entered the body of the Great Wolf (who had allowed him to do so) and enraged at seeing what Utlapa was doing as he pretended to be the tribal leader, the wolf transformed into Taha Aki and Utlapa was found out. Taha Aki gained the ability to change to-and-from wolf form since then, and found that as long as he did not abandon his wolf form, he did not age like his first two wives (who both died of old age).
Important to note from this is that:
The wolves are immortal as long as they keep phasing
It is likely their spirits keeping them immortal, as obviously spirits cannot age, and as long as the pack members embrace their wolf side they do not age
If humans who discovered magic can enter the spirit world, and the wolves – immortals – were created by this spirit world and have reactions to other immortal kinds, then the magic the tribe used is related to whatever makes vampires (and their gifts) tick. If they were not somehow intertwined then they would not find vampires repulsive, and vice versa; there would be no reaction to meeting other immortals if they were not of the same sphere
I have a theory that once a vampire is killed, it is simply that their body is destroyed and their spirit lives on. Well, they’re immortal, right? As the spirit world the tribe explored was the same world as the living, and they could observe the living (like ghosts I suppose), it is likely that the vampire “afterlife” is exactly the same place. Their spirits walk among us.
Carlisle has not lost his soul. Aro is wrong. Surely he will be considering the history of the wolves, now he knows it?
Vampires’ bodies are burnt but their spirits live on and interact with each other as they would have done while living (minus the ability to kill one another).
However, as the ability for spirits to enter bodies stands, this leaves the gate open for possession.
If the humans could possess each other’s bodies (like Utlapa possessed Taha Aki), then dead vampires – spirits without bodies – can posses them too. Yet what if vampires were able to enter, and control, the bodies of humans whose spirits are still inside their bodies?
For Utlapa to possess Taha Aki’s body he needed Taha Aki to have left his body, and for Taha Aki to get into the body of the Great Wolf he needed permission, but we know that vampires are a lot stronger than humans.
Second, a vampire is not going to ask permission – a vampire may have been able to force its way into the Great Wolf. What is a wolf compared to a vampire? The Quileutes have respect for nature and animals, but most vampires don’t. Not even the Cullens do.
How many dead vampires have possessed living humans? How many humans are trapped in their bodies watching someone else do everything in their name? Could this be where the ideas of poltergeists, changelings and possession come from? What if someone who was possessed was changed? Are there vampires everyone believes dead walking around living new lives as humans, experiencing human life over and over again? What about Children of the Moon? Do they have immortal spirits too? Is killing one’s body actually killing its spirit? If when Caius dies, will he be met with an afterlife full of his personal nightmare? It opens a world of possibilities!
I have a theory (not necessarily one I believe in but find absolutely fascinating) about one particular person who might have been possessed, to be discussed in a later post.
Keen to hear everyone’s thoughts on this!
